Hello again,
For testing, I translated a short .docx document with Cafetran and then exported it to package (sdlrpx) to see if my client can open it. Unfortunately she can't but she told me not to return a package but rather a xlf file. But somehow I can't do this. When I export the translation I get a folder with the original as .xlf (Test.xlf) and the translation as .docx (Test_fr-CH.docx).
What do I have to do to get the translation in .xlf format?

I think I found it out: the xlf is actually the translated file, right? The name got me confused ...

Hi Irene,
Your test file (Test.xlf) already contains the translation. Other translation tools may be able to open the .xlf file but they will not export to the original format (e.g. docx) from CafeTran's .xlf project files. Such an export needs to be done in CafeTran. The export to sdlppx or sdlrpx can work the other way around, that is, only if you translate in CafeTran the original pre-translated package created in Studio.

Yes, the XLF file is the translated file.
So your workflow is:
DOCX > CafeTran > XLF > Studio?

Yes, for testing reasons the workflow right now ist docx to Cafetran to XLF to Studio. I've just sent the test file to my client so see if she can open it. If yes, everything is fine

I just heard back from my client that she couldn't open the .xlf file. She would need a XLIFF file (she uses Trados). Any ideas what I could do...?

The best workflow is this one:
Client has no existing TM to use
- Your client creates a new translation project in Studio.
- She copies all source segments to the corresponding targets.
- She creates a package and sends it to you.
- You open the SDLPPX file, clear all targets and translate them in CafeTran.
- You return an SDLRPX (return package) to your client.
Or:
Client has an existing TM to use
- Your client creates a new translation project in Studio.
- She uses the TM to pre-translate the project.
- She creates a package and sends it to you.
- You open the SDLPPX file and translate it in CafeTran.
- You return an SDLRPX (return package) to your client.

Thank you for your answer! Yes, this would certainly be best, though just to be sure: There is no way to convert a xlf to a xliff file? If I receive a docx document to be translated by Cafetran and returned as docx as well as xliff, can this be done or not?

XLF is XLIFF. You can rename the extension.

Actually, there's no need to rename the extension. She'll just have to select the correct file format:

I think what your client meant is a xliff file specific to Trados Studio, and it has the *sdlxiff extension.
Cafetran cannot generate this format. You can open an sdlxliff file in Cafetran, translate it and save. But the file must be created in SDL Trados Studio.
