I’ve never posted on LinkedIn. I take everything I read there with a pinch of salt as it seems crowded with self-proclaimed experts on everything and I have no patience for AI-generated posts! I’ve never had a single job through LinkedIn, even when I fell naïvely for a Premium plan.

LinkedIn is absolutely lousy with "thought leaders" and their ilk posting inane nonsense on topics they know absolutely nothing about. This is especially egregious when they post their skewed, ivory-tower views about creative fields (such as translation and localization).
That being said, LinkedIn is great to actually network with both fellow translators and potential clients. Over the two years I have been active there (and I do NOT mince my words), I have found more new clients - both agencies and direct ones - than in the almost 17 years I have been on ProZ.

Although I do have a LinkedIn account, I have never posted anything there, mainly because many posts there are, well, to phrase it the nice way, not necessarily reliable. In fact, I can't even remember the last time I visit said account.

I can relate to some of the comments here.
There are certainly some very "knowledgeable brains" on LinkedIn and, unfortunately, there are also people I would not necessarily trust.
I’ve only been using LinkedIn since around the beginning of this year, and I’ve already had two rather unfortunate experiences.
The first was with a Portuguese “pseudo-writer” who has been gaining quite a bit of attention with emotional posts and books, including posts about the Leiria floods... See more I can relate to some of the comments here.

I’ve only been using LinkedIn since around the beginning of this year, and I’ve already had two rather unfortunate experiences.

He asked his followers for a donation and said that, in return, he would send a free copy of one of his books.
I made a small donation because I wanted to help people affected by that tragedy.
Needless to say, the book never arrived, and I didn’t even get a thank-you email. At this point, I can happily live without the book.
The second happened only a few weeks ago.
Someone whose profile says he is an “AI architect” commented on a post where I was presenting my new website, and told me that the areas I work in were “a risk for translation”.
I replied politely, because that is how I normally deal with people, although I’ll admit I have my own particular flavour when it comes to replying to comments like that.
That said, these experiences haven’t changed the way I use LinkedIn.
I mainly post things related to translation and subtitling, sometimes something as simple as an offer someone made to me, a flower, or something I happen to find interesting.
I’m not particularly fond of the constant self-congratulatory posts, the moralising speeches, or the “look at me!” posts with carefully chosen photos that seem to be everywhere on LinkedIn.
And I’m not there primarily to get clients either.
If a client happens to find me there, I’ll be genuinely grateful! If they don’t, it’s not the end of the world.
For me, LinkedIn is mostly about visibility, sharing things I find relevant or interesting, and meeting people.
Some of those people are brilliant. Some are… an experience. 😄 ▲ Collapse
