I played around with more literal versions before posting this and they sound terrible. Not that this is great, and if you have license to use a transcreation, then all the better.
Trash or garbage for the US. Rubbish for the UK. Waste is neutral.

I don't think you need to translate "separar" because it's understood, at least in English, that 'recycle' means separating out recyclable items.

I've never heard anyone talk about separating trash in order to recycle. IMO, it's totally redundant.

But no one ever makes that distinction when they're talking. PLUS, we don't 'sort' at all. We put recyclables in the recycle bin from the get-go. I can't even imagine someone going through trash and sorting out recyclables. Let's use normal language!
