Hello
I was wondering what the rate for tranlasting birth certificates is? I'm not sure if I should charge per word, per page or just a base rate?
Thank you very much!

Bom dia, Xiomara!
You could charge your typical per word rate, but birth certificates tend to be documents with no more than a few hundred words, usually very formulaic. Most clients end up wanting the format in the translated document to mimic the format of the original, so unless you charge for formatting, you will end up spending a bit more time working on the document, but not making very much even if you charge a high per word rate. In our respective language pairs, I've seen people translate birth certificates for as low as $30. Others have minimums set at $50 or even $75 dollars and refuse to budge any lower than that. Set a price and stick with it. Don't feel like whatever price you set might be too high and it'll scare clients away. They are seeking YOUR services, so its ultimately up to you. ▲ Collapse

Translating and formatting a certificate is very time-consuming

Even if you have a template to use, your productivity will be about 50% lower. So it doesn't make a lot of sense to charge by word count. You may track the time you spend in your next certificate translation job and see for yourself.

Lots of different source formats

Since English is spoken in many different countries birth certificates can look very different depending on the origin. Also, in more exotic countries older certificates may vary from town to town. Some are very straight forward some are very complicated with many boxes and numerous different seals and stamps. Reproducing their format can take hours. Therefore I would not set a fixed price but quote for each job on an individual base. Rule of thumb in Germany is 50€.

The proper answer is - the same as for other translations

Birth or other certificates are nothing special and with the templates in possession of experienced translators are easier to translate than other non-standard documents
