Hi all,
So, just about anything and everything is on the internet. As translators, "Googling" something has nos become something we are generally very good at. Yet...
When it comes to pinpointing the exact explanation/solution for a tech problem we face, it becomes harder to dig up the right answer and may require a lot of reading. When it comes to pinpointing the exact explanation/solution for a tech problem we face, it becomes harder to dig up the right answer and may require a lot of reading. If we're willing to, this part can be skipped by using an AI chat bot. Big systems by Open AI and Google etc. have already gobbled everything that's online but, some of it can be outdated by now.
Solution: using something that can check live what's online, check specifically where we want it to and sum up an answer or solving steps to get us back working.
So, I decided to demo what I found to work best: using the Copilot sidebar in Edge to search a forum I trust. So check out this video showing and explaining the process: https://youtu.be/OE3WmelM5cQ?si=PdISJqcNCN27A277
Once you've understood the principles, I'm sure you could test this by opening ProZ.com in edge (log in to Proz too) and then, from the sidebar, throw a tough question you know has been solved by someone recently.

And to be honest, I think that's a great place for AI at the moment, do the chores we want to avoid so we can get back to working and penning fitting human words as fast as possible.

Not sure if that came across right, did you watch the video? No translation involved here, just a way to get faster (hopefully) to an answer relevant to an issue you're facing while battling technology (CATs) to try to get your (human) translation to work as you'd like. Seemed to work for me, curious to see if it helps more people.

Not sure how much I'm prepared to bet on it, but I'm pretty confident I won't get a sensible answer if I ask the bot what I can do to make Trados meaningfully better at plugging in numbers in Autosuggest (at least to make it as good as memoQ) or to stop the feature that stores individual words (always single words, never expressions) as Word files that will keep hanging in the memory and popping up whenever I enter Word asking me to save or discard the files (this also doesn't allow me to shut d... The goal of the bot here is to work with

The usefulness of the bot in that case is to get you to your answer very fast.
If someone that understands these "test" conditions, it would be interesting to describe an issue or a goal, and try to see if it comes up with an adequate answer after looking in the right location. Si to test adequately, we need:
_A single clear question, problem, or task
_Assured knowledge that this has been answered/solved online
_Knowledge of where to look for the answer (website name or forum name)
_Access to the above (i.e. if contents are hidden behind a log in)

I show how to use "Copilot" to do this effectively. Microsoft Copilot runs on Chat GTP 4 Turbo and gives it access to what's on the internet right now. So, you're using a filtered, live online, with a limit to context size of Chat GPT. But you're using it for stuff that it's intended to do: general tasks (not specifically translation), and I tend to think it's good at performing that kind of general stuff to make your life easier, a bit like a robot vacuum cleaner.

I don’t see how it saves time as you still have to check the results for the right term. And how is it easier than typing a search in Google?
As an experienced and specialised translator, the only time I have problems with terms is when there isn’t one in English. So searching the internet for existing translations won’t help however up to date the search is.

They were really funny, so it's too bad that I don't know where this book is: I tried to find some of those jokes online and failed. Ivantsov is an admirable character. He can answer any question within two seconds. "Ivantsov, what's the height of the Eiffel tower?" "265 meters." "How many ant species are there?" "6071." "What are the main chemical elements that make up bronze?" "Copper and zinc." Quite admirable, except that that all the answers he gives are wrong...

Absolutely not. Not talking about new tools, using existing one and no, a standard Google search or similar can’t get you this. If you can spare 10 mins, watch the entire video so you can get the idea. https://youtu.be/OE3WmelM5cQ?si=meDeyXXKI3gH_QR_
The general idea is to help translators find technical help faster this way without having to ask a CAT tool question in a forum or contacting the hotline. If the answer to their question exists online, this method will help them get the information they need in less time than the usual methods. Hopefully, that comes across right this time. Anyway, I won’t make another post to clarify again, the video is self-explanatory IMO.

Ah, I see, sorry, I thought you meant technical translation questions, not technical IT questions.
If turning on your PC again doesn't work, reinstall the software. Always works for me!
I have never understood how the tech-minded people on here have so many technical issues...

You are implicitly assuming that published solutions are good. Unfortunately, this is not always the case; in fact, the amount of patently incorrect information being presented on the web as authoritative seems to be on the increase, and not without AI's help... Furthermore, relying upon quick solutions of this kind tends to breed complacency, which can sooner or later cause harm.

I watched the video and have some doubts.
For example, when on Facebook, how does the bot get access to search a group without its own account? Or does the bot act on your behalf (e.g. with your identity)?
There is also the paradox that you need to know already the answer to recognise if it is correct. How would you otherwise assess this?

That's one of the major issues with those chatties: you only have a single "source" (or you need to thell them to provide credible reference sources and possibly tell you why they are authoritative and to what extent - and still can't rely on their answers).
But I have a questions more connected to Copilot than to the topic of this thread. Could the tool do things like for example highlighting cells in an Excel file in a specific color based on a simple prompt? (superseding -some- macros)
PS: I also watched your video on the Intento comparision of MT and LLM tools, very interesting! In a nutshell: LLMs/chatties (that's what most people mean when the say "AI") are not that suitable for serious translation purposes.

In the examples shown in the video, that was actually the best way to get the correct answers.
However, it's clear that what is saying is valid. However, if you're doing this in languages where LLM are good (English, Spanish, French...) the bot (Microsoft Copilot = Chat GPT Turbo with added limitations) will be able to identify contrary answers and present you both with a tiny bit of explanations. It should give you the links to where it dug the info from, if not, ask it to give you the links. This way you can check the sources for scrutiny.
