A play I saw last night (http://www.proz.com/?sp=bb/viewtopic&topic=6187&forum=16&1) makes me wonder: Are places like theatre or academia, i.e. a sophisticated reality, or ProZ, i.e. a virtual reality, just about the only places on earth where people of various nationalities can (relatively) peacefully co-exist? Characters in the above (utopian) play spoke Hebrew, Arabic, Russian, English and Italian and killing each other was not what they had in mind. Do you know areas where people who speak different languages and do not carry the same passport or green card live together and do not hate each other?
I was recently struck by the comment that the historical reason for the proverbial brotherhood of Poles and Hungarians is that the two nations have never shared a border, so that they could not engage in the primary human activity which is war.

That is probably why a group of us (informally referred to as \"Camilleri Fan Club\"), led by Angela Arnone (ita>eng moderator), have proposed Sicily for the next ProZ Convention!
Tonight, I am going to see Materlinck\'s \"The Blind\": \"Twelve faces emerge from the dark foliage of a forest. All of them are blind and immobilised, they cannot move without their guide, who doesn\'t answer any more. And so they talk - to keep away the silence and the anguish.\"

I\'d rather be in Sicily this time of the year!

But there\'s a story behind that. When the British left Malaysia, they wanted to guarantee a free port for the Chinese, Indian, British and Malaysian traders who were also under their mandate. So Malaysia was made independent on the condition it would make Singapore independent (geographically it looks artificial, the place is just a speck at the tip of the Malaysian peninsula, but the arrangement works very well.)

As to the argument about Poland and Hungary, I\'ve heard the same about Spain and Germany, who get along quite well... (but the French, the Portuguese and the British have common borders with Spain).

I think ProZ matches the definition just fine - here, it\'s people who speak the same language who don\'t get along
No, seriously, I love to think that ProZ is a good example of a community where language, nationality, race, gender or whatever do not matter.
But as Jacek named this thread ›Tower of Babel‹, did it occur to anyone that our profession might be considered ungodly? (Just a philosoph... See more I think ProZ matches the definition just fine - here, it\'s people who speak the same language who don\'t get along

We should buy a tropic island, form a community where everyone is living in peace and harmony , and everyone understands what the other one is talking about (or even if someone wouldn\'t understand, someone else would translate it for him/her ). Everyone in the world would want to live in such place, everyone would want to know all languages... Grrr, nightmare ... See more | | | Jacek Krankowski (X) angličtina -> polština + ...
