Frankly, looking at the sample answers, $0.01-$0.02 seems a little on the high side, don't you think?

It is most unfortunate that this website serves as a portal for so many such offers (i.e., those that are both "obscenely low" and simply "very low") without offering translators any means of feedback to such offers (i.e., such as including purely rate-based criteria as part of the Blue Board ratings for the companies making such offers).

Instead, what typically happens is that we simply vent to one another on forums such as this, while the offers continue to stream in on the home page of a site where so many of us spend so much of our time.

Offers not from ProZ Oct 9, 2009

These offers do not come from ProZ, but from another "freelance" jobs portal.

I was not astounded that some people responded, but I was astonished at the sheer number of people desperate for any crumb of a job. In fact, there are 59 PAGES of responses.

I do not believe that ridiculous "opportunities" like that depress the market in general. You have described a world that has very little to do with that of a translation professional. You get what you pay for, and those who pay such rates get what they deserve.

Offer not from proz.com Oct 9, 2009

To Jeff:

Point taken. However many similar offers (and many that fall into only a slightly less ridiculous category) appear on this site as well.

To Kevin:

I think that your assertion is debatable, and that the ridiculously low offers do indeed form part of the equation as to what comes to be considered as "acceptable" (at least in terms of publicly advertised offers on the kinds of jobs boards that we are discussing here).

It's just a pity that professionals will go unnoticed and unrecognized as a consequence...
I happened to handle a translation into french for a Company. At the back of the original Italian text there was the English version and I naively proposed to re-do the English translation as it was riddled with mistakes. The Marketing Manager (who claims "he knows English very well"!) answered that they had already printed 5000 copies, and in any case nobody reads instructions leaflets.
I decided there and then that I shall never again deal with amateurs. It's their funeral, even if I'm also paying for it.

I am impressed that an MT system (at merely 2700wph a rather slow one, I have to say) managed to autonomously submit a quote which linguistically beats the competition hands down. Looks like the machines are taking over now...

And last, but by no means least, the gold medal goes to:
"Hi, I am the director of a call centre located in India.I would give rest of the details once we go for the next level of our communication.I have different teams who are ready to work for translations(International languages are French,Spanish, greek, hebrew and german and our teams work by swapping the languages ie from english to french and french to english)"

Simply for bidding for this job and then having his obedient horde of sla...translators do the job at 0.0005 Icelandic Krona per word. Well done! In fact, this should be a platinum medal...

0.01 Euros for 10,000 words? Must be an all-time low

that many outsourcers with publicly known low to very low prices are praised with the maximum ratings on translation portals.
When comparing the prices they offer to the ratings they receive, one can but only wonder who in earth (and more precisely: in the Western hemisphere of the world and in "developed" countries) is working for those outsourcers...
