Most of my clients confirm receipt of both my work and my invoices. In addition, I always request both a delivery receipt and a read receipt (options available in most email programs) when emailing work and invoices. Well, I usually expect to receive the file reciept and some do right away after they receive the file. Otherwise I wait until end of day and then I send an email to confirm the file received report.

Most of my clients do confirm receipt of email within a couple of hours after I submitted my translation work. However a few of them sometimes don’t respond to it. In such a case, I ask for a confirmation or ask them ‘How did my translation go?’

I answered "Yes". Most of my clients confirm receipt and thank me for my work, but I've never once asked for a confirmation.

Maybe I just have a friendly, responsive set of clients.

Or maybe it's a Carnegie-esque way of reciprocating behavior. That is, I always confirm receipt of anything my clients send to me, and I sign most emails with a "Thanks!" (or "Merci!"). Perhaps they naturally do the same in response. *shrug*

Or maybe it's because living in the US and working primarily with clients in Europe, that means I almost always deliver work in the wee hours of morning so that it's waiting for the client when they arrive in the office, fresh and undistracted.

And like others have already pointed out, they are much less thankful when I send my invoice at the end of the month!

My European customers do. Several of them have to (according to their quality procedure and ISO whatever certification).
As for American continent clients, I have to ask, sometimes even beg for a receipt...

I don't think it's a question of being too busy to send a receipt confirmation. It's a matter of politeness and professional attitude towards your business partners. As everybody knows, for a confirmation (or a "thank you") e-mail you don't need to type too many words.

Most reply/confirm receipt but I don't fret over those who don't. In my experience, clients may not always be generous with feedback, thanks or confirmation - but they're always quick to get back to you if something is not right ... So for me, "no news is good news".

I'm curious as to how you can 'require' customers to confirm receipt. Although I always use the return receipt request through my email client, only a few actually click the OK button; most click the CANCEL button to get around it for some reason. So, I don't see how anyone can be required to confirm receipt. I think not confirming receipt of a file is disrespectful of the translator as most of us worry about whether or not the file was received because we don't want to miss a deadline, but I also think it is a way for clients not to confirm until they have read the work and are confirming that they have received properly-done work. Many of my clients who do confirm by writing a reply email only seem to do so once they have time to actually open the file and take a look at it. Others just don't bother at all for whatever reason.

I always request confirmation when I deliver a project, and I expect to get it, even if it's just a "File received".

If I don't hear from them within a few hours of my delivery (depending on the time zone), I contact them again with something like "I'll assume that you have safely received the file if I don't hear from you otherwise".

Having said that, my European clients are much more consistent about confirming reception; sometimes my American clients don't confirm reception for days, if ever.

On the other hand, when a client contacts me regarding an uncoming project, I always let me them know that I will confirm reception of the file before beginning to work on it. If they don't receive a confirmation, they should assume I have not received the file and either re-send it or contact me to find out what's going on.

This has definitely cut down on the "Although I know it's midnight where you are and you can't confirm you can accept this project, I'm sure you can work it in...it's pretty straightforward and not due until day after tomorrow" malarkey.

When I send in the translation work, I ask them to confirm receipt. Most of them do, but if they don't I follow up with till they confirm. I don't want to give them the chance to later claim that they never received it and use that as an excuse to delay payment!

Quite often, I work through an automated system. As soon as I have uploaded the translated file, it disappears from my pending jobs list in the system.
