German term

Echse

German to English Science Zoology Lizards
I've found 'saurian', but when googling that, I get a load of Star Trek extras. Am I worng in saying it's not simply lizard? I have a document with a pile of animals listed. 'Eidechse' I have down as lizard, so what is an 'Echse'? I also have a feeling that it might be some kind of priative lizard, closer related to the dinosaurs, slightly fish-like perhaps.

Thank you in advance for any help!

Thanks.
agree John Speese : I would say that Echse and Eidechse are essentially synonymous, if there's any difference it's maybe the size; the small wall lizards and geckos are Eidechsen and Komodo dragons are Echsen.
