Discussion

Kim Metzger Mar 7, 2012:
With Lindsay. Section leader or team leader should be OK.
Could be 'section leader' but I'm not 100% positive.
Roman Lutz (asker) Mar 7, 2012:
UK English is the required target language.
Kim Metzger Mar 7, 2012:
Into which variety of English are you transating?

agree hazmatgerman (X) : Or section chief, although I'd use the latter for NCOs rather than officers proper. Regards.

Navigationsoffizier

As a Warfare Officer, the outcome of the mission and the safety of your ship and crew will be in your hands. As well as being a decisive leader, you’ll be a skilled seaman and navigator, able to handle your ship safely in all conditions and represent the Captain on the bridge as an Officer of the Watch.

Specialist fleet training for junior warfare officers concentrates on shiphandling, seamanship and bridge watchkeeping. The initial warfare officers' (IWO) course is undertaken at the Maritime Warfare School leading to a first complement job in a surface ship. Junior submarine warfare officers undertake training at the Submarine School at HMS Raleigh in Plymouth before being appointed to a complement job in a submarine. The junior warfare officer is responsible for navigation and bridge watchkeeping, where they will ensure the navigational safety of all ship operations on behalf of the captain.
Engineer officers are responsible for the material condition of the various aspects of maritime platforms: ships, submarines and naval aircraft and as such lead teams of naval ratings to conduct preventive and corrective maintenance.

This might be a parallel case. It appears "Navigationsoffizier" establishes the rank, and "Abschnittsleiter" specifies what the person is in charge of, and there we would need more context.
