German term

Ausschwemmung

German to English Medical Medical: Cardiology
The patient was hospitalized due to cardiac decompensation associated with known massive left ventricular hypertrophy.

Epikrise:
"Insgesamt kam es während des stationären Aufenthaltes zur Ausschwemmung von mindestens 8 kg Ödemflüssigkeit."

I could say 'collection', but I'm not happy with it. Does anyone have a better idea?

Loss of 8kg of fluid

From the context, and based on my experience of cardiology, it seems likely that the patient was massively overloaded with fluid as a result of the severe heart failure. Once diuretic therapy was instigated, the patient lost 8kg in weight, all of which was due to fluid. It's actually quite remarkable, the amount of fluid that people can accumulate as a result of heart failure...

So perhaps "The patient lost 8kg in weight following diuresis", or something along those lines?
Peer comment(s):

agree Harald Moelzer (medical-translator) : "diuresis" would work here IMO, "loss of fluid following diuresis" would be somewhat tautologic... ;-)

discharge/outflow

couple of ideas ...
Note from asker:
Discharge is sth very specific in medicine. Edema fluid is usually not discharged. Outflow, however, indicates continuous action, doesn't it? Thanks for your ideas.

diuresis

I would think that this is what's meant here... (i.e. the effects of diuresis > removal, flushing out http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/13026182 of excess water)

That is, diuresis induced flushing out of water. So, the term in question could mean "flushing out", but I think "diuresis induced flushing out" is a better option.

Ausschwemmung

the prefix aus- seems to indicate fluid going out, as one would expect :), as in diuresis, flooding, elimination;

Thanks, Merry. Yes, elimination may work. Flooding, I'm afraid, not. :>)
