Discussion

Conny, could you give us a little more context?

If this is actually a border crossing, then you could call it a \'minor border crossing\', but that would be an unusual use of the word!

"Kleiner Grenzverkehr", Conny, as opposed to "Großer Grenzverkehr" (capitalized!) has nothing to do with the volume of cross-border traffic. Rather, it is a system in which people crossing the border into adjacent comunities were subject to special regulations. You could not, for instance, take your regular allowance of 200 cigarettes across the border. On the other hand, there were a number of regulations that made cross-border traffic into adjacent communities easier. For a number of years, I lived in Salzburg, Austria, where the German border was at the same time the city limits. I frequently went across the border to buy my groceries in Germany (much cheaper at the time) but had to watch that customs wouldn't find out.

The areas that were under the regime of the "Kleine Grenzverkehr" were (and in cases where the adjacent country is not a member of the Schengen Treaty, still are) clearly delineated on both sides of the border. They are usually located contiguous to the international border.

"Kleiner Grenzverkehr" thus indicates cross-border traffic between adjacent ommunities, subject to special rules and regulations. I hope you can explain that in plain English without having to give a lengthy explanation.

Good luck!
Peer comment(s):

agree Ingrid Mueller : Volkmar, I think you're right, although the special tariff regulations of the "Zollgrenzbezirk" does not necessary play a role in this context.

The special tariff regulations, Wolga, were only meant to serve as an illustration, as, indeed, was the entire explanation.
