: eigentlich schön, weil realm eher als kingdom vielfältig interpretiert werden kann. Wenns nur um die Subjekte ginge, hätte ich noch "ruler without ruled" falls das English genug klingt. Gruß.

: Agreed - I like the alliteration as a style matter and as Hazmat says, it avoids naming a type of ruler by name (monarch / parliament / dictator) even if the context itself may be less inclined to see a specific type.

I know that maharajas and kings are not normally elected by their subjects, but have posted this suggestion because the asker has clarified in her note to erika rubinstein that "es sind nicht unbedingt Könige..." Also, the asker states that "Herrscher ohne Reich" bezieht sich auf verschiedene Persönlichkeiten..."
