new EU member states in Eastern Europe

A bit long-winded, but I think it gets the point across.

agree Heidi Stone-Schaller : this is the best option for an otherwise non-EU context ("accession" is EU-speak, everybody doesn't necessarily know what is meant by that)

Eastern accession countries

Hi Natalie,

I'd go for Eastern accession countries. This is also what I first thought when I saw your posting. I've heard it used quite a lot.

HTH,

Sarah

On second thoughts, Alison is right of course - you have to mention something about the EU Eastern accession countries of the EU, maybe.
Peer comment(s):

agree Neil Gouw : just "accession countries" would do too, since Malta and Cyprus aren't really eastern European.

Thanks Neil
agree Hans G. Liepert : Neil just "accession countries" is different, since the original text is explicitel talking about Ljubljana as excelling among the eastern states

Thanks Griebler
agree Kevin Lossner : This is the term I usually see, though Alison's phrase is common enough too

Thanks Kevin
agree Mario Marcolin : "Eastern accession countries" would allow for the fact that Slovenia is a Central European rather than East European country..

Thank you Mario
disagree AnkeSR : Term used by British government agency is EU enlargement countries. Just type in that term in google search. Wait and see :-)
