German term

Abdriften

German to English Medical Genetics
Abdriften = Herstellung von Embryonen zu Forschungszwecken

I have heard the term "reprodructive cloning" before, but is there an actual translation for "Abdriften"

genetic drift

Here are some websites that deal with the concept of genetic drift; however, I believe the last link might fit your context the best.
Hope this helps!

Gregory Stock, Director of UCLA’s Program on Medicine, Technology and Society:
"Once people begin to reshape themselves through biological manipulation, the definition of human begins to drift.... Altering even a small number of the key genes regulating human growth might change human beings into something quite different....But asking whether such changes are ‘wise’ or ‘desirable’ misses the essential point that they are largely not a matter of choice; they are the unavoidable product of...technological advance..."

drift off

This is a nautical and aeronautical term. yoou can of, course use it figuratively lkie "he drifted off towards his dreams"

stray from

I think in this context Abdriften means to stray from legitimate research goals.

agree Maya Jurt : Which means exactly drift off - abdriften.

But you'd hardly say drift off from legitimate goals

random genetic drift
Changes in allelic frequency due to sampling error. Changes in allele frequency that result because the genes appearing in offspring are not a perfectly representative sampling of the parental genes. (eg. in small populations). See also founder
effect.
