Glossary entry (derived from question below)
German term or phrase:
Erfassungsstelle (VEAB-)
English translation:
registration agency (Volkseigener Erfassungs- und Aufkaufbetrieb)
German term
Erfassungsstelle (VEAB-)
I came across a "VEAB-Erfassungsstelle" recently (a GDR relic in the form of a grubby building in Neuwegersleben, a small village west of Oschersleben (Bode)).
I'd be interested to know what exactly an "Erfassungsstelle" is (something to do with recording of units of agricultural production perhaps?), as well as the meaning of the abbreviation VEAB (volkseigener Aussenbetrieb?).
Thanks for any suggestions!

That's fine. Though there are plenty of services and agencies ("acting on behalf of" is what that means too) who do not serve anyone's best interests except their own!!
Actually I changed "service" to "agency", as their activities weren't exactly in the service of the people .... |

: Yes, I should have mentioned that it had an agricultural application in my translation, too.
