I support your literal version, which I think is a reasonably valid, but a bit quaint name for ascorbic acid. An -l was missing from the original.
On the bottom left corner of the illustration at the linked page you will see the endiol moiety (-C(OH)=C(OH)-) just below the carboxyl group in the ascorbic acid structural formula.
