German term

ca. 1% XYZ (product name) 98%ig

German to English Tech/Engineering Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng Horticulture/chemicals
last one I hope in the wretched series on blossom thinning agent. In a list headed Konzentrationen (grobe Richtwerte) does it mean:
"approx 1% XYZ (product) 98% proof" What does that -ig on the end of the second % figure actually mean? "concentration" perhaps? It seems to make no sense to write 1% XYZ 98% on its own

I think proof is only used for spirits!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks again for the prompt and very informative reply. It seems so obvious once you know....Had a feeling the "proof" bit was the lay person in me revealing itself :-) Now, if I can just crack the berostungsneutral (not in online dictionary) I will be able to put these apples to rest..."

Percent

"-ig" is the suffix to make an adjective.
So, %ig is "prozentig". In English, both noun and adjective are "percent".

Here \"98%ig\" indicates purity of the XYZ.
\"1% solution of 98% XYZ\"
or \"1% solution of XYZ (98% in purity)\"

98% is NOT the \"concentration\" but the \"purity\" of the substance XYZ. 1% is the concentration of the solution. You must not mix up \"concentration\" and \"purity\".

Gillian has just guessed the \"ig\" part and not given any concrete answer to the real meaning of it. It is a suffix \"-ig\" which makes an adjective form of \"percent.\" Thus it means \"98% purity of XYZ is dissolved to make 1% solution\" and conventionally it is expressed as \"1% solution of 98% XYZ.\"
