German term

Schriftschreiben

German to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Design

Besten Dank!

Discussion

Helen Shiner Jul 10, 2011:
Context Hi MichAlt, within this particular context, your suggestion of hand lettering would be most appropriate.
Michael Altmann (asker) Jul 10, 2011:
Thanks a lot for your input, I like your suggestion.
Sarah Swift Jul 10, 2011:
"Schriftgestalter" in the original context seems to cover people who design calligraphic scripts/scripts for handwriting as well as type designers. So maybe the whole thing could be: history of writing, calligraphic script and type designers, handwriting and typesetting
Michael Altmann (asker) Jul 10, 2011:
Thanks for the swift answers! I like "calligraphy".
I used "history of writing; type designers" for the first two.
There is not too much context here as it's one of those bad uni texts just listing things. The whole paragraph reads: "Schriftgeschichte; SchriftgestalterInnen; Schriftschreiben und Schriftsetzen; Zusammenhang zwischen Werkzeugen,Technologien, Medien und Schriftformentwicklung; Gestaltungsraster, Ordnung und Gliederung; Text-Bild-Beziehungen, Schriftgestalten in Grundlagen; Grundlagen der Lesbarkeit; Schriftklassifikationen; Typografie als „Botschaft“; Schrift und Farbe; Print versus Screen; Haptik von Papier"
Sarah Swift Jul 10, 2011:
Schriftschreiben often refers to joined-up writing, the second form of handwriting taught in schools (after children have learned to print), and possibly revised once more by budding typesetters, as in your second source. In the first context, though, I think "calligraphy and typesetting" would probably be a legitimate translation of the last two concepts. What have you done with the first two? And could we have some more context, what comes before and after this line?
Michael Altmann (asker) Jul 10, 2011:
Or does anybody know if "hand lettering" could be an English term for that?

Note from asker:
Thanks for that, seems to be the right term in this context! I had already suspected it could be "hand lettering" but could only enter it as a discussion entry after posting.

agree Trude Stegmann : This is the professional term you are looking for, the term is used even in a German Graphic design context for the activity you describe. Calligraphy refers more to a specifically decorative script.

Have to admit you're right! / Still like to think it COULD be part of the course, but otherwise hand lettering is better.
