German term

Architekturvermittlung

German to English Marketing Architecture film industry
XXX ist ein professionelles Film- und Video-Portal der ZZZZ im Bereich der *Architekturvermittlung* und Dokumentation

And..

... zum Zweck der *Architekturvermittlung* und Architekturdokumentation aktiv mitzugestalten...

I am not sure exactly what Architekturvermittlung is, but so far I understand it to be the provision of architectural elements, like placing buildings on a film set (?). Is there a proper English term for this type of thing? Universities teach this as courses so there must be a proper term for it.

Discussion

Helen Shiner Sep 14, 2009:
Hi Inge It would have been helpful if you had given the extra information about what this company actually does from the start, since it appears that it differs from the content of university courses. There were a lot of people trying to help you here without access to context evident to you.
Inge Luus (asker) Sep 12, 2009:
Thank you very much Kim and Victor for helping me with this term :). Much appreciated.
Inge Luus (asker) Sep 11, 2009:
Victor, re: digging deeper - it appears to be just a provision of films and videos of architecture for architects and construction people - they will be allowed to use the images and place links. Not sure what they will use the material for.
Victor Dewsbery Sep 11, 2009:
Digging deeper Is it an attempt to sell existing buildings (i.e. advertising the buildings themselves, saying "This place is great for your new office"), or to gain new clients for architectural work, i.e. "Let me do the same for you"?
Inge Luus (asker) Sep 11, 2009:
Victor, the service is provided to architects and people in the construction industry.
Victor Dewsbery Sep 11, 2009:
Question to Inge Is this a service provided to the general public or national architectural associations (i.e. public education), or is the service provided to individual architects (as a form of corporate public relations work, or even advertising?)
Inge Luus (asker) Sep 11, 2009:
Thanks, Kim. Yes, initially I thought this was related to the film industry and I think that's what caused my initial confusion with this word. It is however, about media (films and videos) relating to architecture, or, of buildings, etc. Thanks for your help - architecture marketing, or PR, sounds good!
Kim Metzger Sep 11, 2009:
Your subheading - film industry - is a bit misleading.

Introduction to architecture

This term is used for activities to promote public knowledge about architecture and architectural concepts. Possible ways to word this:

- General architectural education
- Architectural awareness
- Introduction to architecture
- Architecture in the public eye
- Public communication about architecture
Note from asker:
Thanks for your answer - I should have been a bit clearer - this is a service that the company provides.
As I mentioned to Helen below, I think I will go with architectural promotion - that also encompasses public communication as you mentioned.
Peer comment(s):

agree Kim Metzger : Maybe something with 'publicity'. Or your Public communication about architecture. /architecture marketing? http://archthinking.blogspot.com/2009/06/does-architecture-m...

architecture appreciation

without further context, I'd put it on the same level as "art apprecialtion courses" only in this instance for architecture, with the aim to educate and inform the layman/aficionado on the various periods/styles and elements.

so maybe "in the area of architecture appreciation and documentation". However I thought together with documentation it might point towards monetary assessment, so as an alternative the more unwieldy "in the area of appreciation of architecture and architecture documentation." .

On the other hand, for the heck of it I just googled "architecture appreciation" and got 2.000 hits (one example below), so I guess I'm not too far off course.
Note from asker:
Thanks, Birgit!

architectural presentation //interpretation/communication of architecture

I think this might be about presentation methods for architects, which is clearly a big deal. PR is part of it, but so is choosing the right sort of means to get the message across in more physical terms - architectural modelling, 3-D presentations

Interpretation and Communication of Architecture (Master of Arts)
This new Master programme offered by the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Urban Planning at Brandenburg University of Technology is made to measure for graduates of advanced studies programmes who want to focus professionally on the communication of Architecture and the City to the public in visual and verbal terms.

The courses of the programme encompass fundamental scientific knowledge from media theory, communication psychology, aesthetics and art theory, theory of culture and history of architecture, as well as applied disciplines like management, museology, or visual and verbal representation. Practical projects form an important third part, in which a number of conceptual presentation and mediation strategies can be applied to promote Architecture and the City in various situations, as well as researching and practicing how to properly exploit and design the most suitable media.

The study programme is conducted with a practical orientation in close cooperation with several institutions actively involved in the promotion of Architecture and the City.

Interpretation is a key concept in the world of museums and heritage institution, and there are many over-lapping areas of interest for architectural custodians or, indeed, practicising architects.
Note from asker:
Thank you Helen for adding this dimension. I think that architectural promotion might just fit the bill in light of the above. Promotion is one aspect of marketing (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promotion_(marketing)) - the company provides images of architecture, so they are not really properly marketing architecture as such, but providing a tool for other architects, which they can then interpret, etc.

PR

Does Architecture Marketing Work?
My coworker and I had a really interesting conversation recently about architecture marketing* - specifically about awards and publishing.
The office had an honor wall - a wall filled with nothing but magazine covers dedicated to them and their work and awards given to the firm.

Architecture Marketing
Even the big boys started small. Calatrava. Meyer. Ghery. Koolhaas. All these great architects began as no-name architecture school students at one point or another.
But what sets these world famous names apart from the rest of us? In a word: architecture marketing.
Of course, their competitive methods of marketing back then probably looked a lot different from what would work today. Now, one of the leading sources of leads can actually come from effective online advertising. Indeed, in today’s fast-paced, global market of architectural competitions and world personas, it may be difficult for the small firm to get off the ground. But with a targeted, multi-faceted, Internet advertising campaign, your small firm could begin to compete with the pan-national talent of Zaha Hadid and Daniel Libeskind.

agree Victor Dewsbery : I think your "architectural PR" gets closest to the sort of thing Inge is describing.
