English term

cubicle-farm/cube-farm

English to Russian Other Slang
cube farm - n. A collection of cubicles in an office.

Example Citation:
"The beloved Cube Farm began to crop up on our office landscape in the 1970s with what Haworth design manager Jeff Reuschel calls a 'noble purpose': replacing the 'bullpens full of desks' that were the norm back then with 'a more flexible, fluid solution.'"
—Dale Fuchs, "The OK Work Corral; New Breeds of Cubicles Keep Coming," The Commercial Appeal

***This citation below comes the closest to capturing the connotation of the term***

A farm in which cubicle employees, usually programmers, are treated like farm animals in battery farms. No space, poor lighting, uncomfortable conditions and no privacy. Essentially 'farming' their productivity while caring little about their health or welfare. CubeFarms are looked down upon by all who have been worked in one, but sadly due to 'cost saving' most tech companies use them.

Discussion

Blithe Mar 30, 2005:
because I'm the King and I find it insulting to compete with such mediocracy.
Blithe Mar 30, 2005:
Kireill, isn't it funny that when people say "nothing personal", it is actually VERY personal? Because that's what your remark about my variant was. Not in so many words you said: the other versions are so dull that I won't even dignify them with comments

Kirill Semenov Mar 30, 2005:
Blithe: Nothing personal. It's just a general tendency which I perfectly understand. Not that it does not makes me sad or anything. Maybe it's just what the modern times need. 2 years ago it was different, anyway. People somewhat appreciated play of word.
Blithe Mar 30, 2005:
thank you, Kirill:) Now I don't even know what to do, maybe to hide my answer- who wants to be dull? But why did you hide your literary variant?
Kirill Semenov Mar 30, 2005:
OK, the problem is that there are few literary translantors. You'll get a direct and `dull' translation instead. Happens in kudoZ. If anything write me directly.
Non-ProZ.com Mar 30, 2005:
Kirill I don't need anything official. I am simply looking for a way to say this that conveys the meaning.
Kirill Semenov Mar 30, 2005:
Do you need anything `official' or of a literary kind?

And that\'s how we used to call them when I worked in Moscow in a similar office. I don\'t know if Kirill finds it direct or dull translation, but actually it is not translation at all, because at that time we did not even know the word \"cubicle/cube farm\".

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Though I am loathe to accept such a dull, literal translation, I a left with no other choice since it's the best available : ) Thanks Blithe!"
