Taxpayers forked out more than £7million last year to subsidise bills at parliament’s bars and restaurants.

But that was a £600,000 saving on the previous 12 months, said a spokeswoman.

Catering services at the House of Commons ran at a £4.9million loss, figures released under the Freedom of Information Act revealed.

And the cost of running the House of Lords’ bars and restaurants was £2.3million in 2012/13.

The Commons has put up prices in its bars to reduce the burden on the public purse, said officials who have blamed parliament’s ‘irregular hours’ for the costs.

TaxPayers’ Alliance chief executive Matthew Sinclair said the ‘generous subsidies’ at the bars and restaurants should have been scrapped a long time ago and criticised the prime minister for going back on a pledge.
