The tweak is an important advance, solving one of the key problems in producing affordable, efficient biofuels, says Jay Keasling of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. "It's essential that we have biomass that's readily degradable that we can easily extract sugars from to turn into fuel."

It might seem dangerous to genetically modify such a fundamental aspect of plant biology. But the risks are low, says Ronald Sederoff of North Carolina State University in Raleigh. "There's no reason to believe that this is dangerous in any way, or that it is associated with invasiveness," he says. The poplars did not "notice" the chemical changes made to their lignin, so Sederoff says the modified plants would have no advantage over wild cousins, and no potential to spread or cause damage in nature.
