footnote references on a historical document
I'm translating an article about an 18th century Dutch painter. The reference below is given as a footnote to a sentence telling where the painter's mother was born. I know that Dorpsger is dorpsgerecht. I've found plenty of references to RAU , for example here http://www.nikhef.nl/~louk/VARIA/varia.g13.ref.html, but can't find what it stands for, or what toeg. could be.
RAU, toeg. 45, Dorpsger Loenen 1145, volgnr 175.
All help very gratefully received.

PS: sth like "Utrecht Public Records Office" would probably sound better.
Also, these days, the Rijksarchief Utrecht is called "Het Utrechts Archief".
(thanks for the tip Barend!)

Since this 'toegangsnummer' seems to bring you to a 'finding aid' as defined below.

according to these standards. This means that existing finding aids will have to be encoded retrospectively
according to these description standards. Through the use of a literature study and interviews, this thesis
seeks to answer the question: "How can EAD/EAC be applied in a standard manner to the digitalisation
of finding aids in small and medium archival institutions?”
...
and is a non-proprietary de facto standard for the encoding of finding aids for use in a networked (online) environment”
...
Making finding aids available online requires a different manner of presentation from the paper finding aids in the reference room.

It could be that this 'toegangsnummer" is in fact the number of the "finding aid".
That is exactly what I am saying, and have been saying.
toegangsnummer" = the number of the "finding aid" = finding aid No.

This may be this finding aid as defined above.

They seem to refer to the same thing.
That is, the number of this specific document as defined below.
1. A tool that facilitates discovery of information within a collection of records. -
2. A description of records that gives the repository physical and intellectual control over the materials and that assists users to gain access to and understand the materials.
Notes:
Finding aid1 includes a wide range of formats, including card indexes, calendars, guides, inventories, shelf and container lists, and registers. -
Finding aid2 is a single document that places the materials in context by consolidating information about the collection, such as acquisition and processing; provenance, including administrative history or biographical note; scope of the collection, including size, subjects, media; organization and arrangement; and an inventory of the series and the folders.

According to English wiki a 'finding aid' is a document
A finding aid No., then, you would expect to be one element from this document.
A finding aid, in the context of archival science, is a document containing detailed information about a specific collection of papers or records within an archive.[1] Finding aids are used by researchers to determine whether information within a collection is relevant to their research. The finding aid for a collection is usually compiled by an archivist or librarian during archival processing.

There is nothing general or abstract about the term "finding aid". It is commonly used in the world of archival science. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finding_aid
The term "toegang" in "toegangsnummer" stands for: "archieftoegang", which in turn equates to a "finding aid". Usually, toegangsnummer is abbreviated as "toeg. nr.". But since it wasn't in the asker's text, I added "[title/number]" to my answer, instead of choosing one (even though the term is of course followed by a number). All quite clear to me.
'toegangsnummer' lijkt me bij nader inzien.
All that is needed, don't you agree?

45 does not look like a title, 'toegangsnummer' makes more sense:

Also try Google:
"RAU" "toegangsnummer"
Hmm, however, LAB2004's src text states "RAU", referring to it's old name. In any case, that's his/her problem. I think I solved the main problem of what the two mean.

Finding aids are a concept dating back to ancient Sumerian clay tablets.[2] In more recent times, finding aids were usually written or, later, printed on paper. Finding aids today can be created in various electronic and print formats, including word processor document, spreadsheet, database, paper list, index card, etc. The standard machine-readable format for manuscript collection finding aids, widely used in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Australia and elsewhere, is Encoded Archival Description.[3]
The content of a finding aid may differ depending on the type of material it is describing. Usually, a finding aid includes a description of the scope of the collection, biographical and historical information ..."

WHAT IS A FINDING AID?
Finding aids (also called guides or descriptive inventories) are the key to locating archival and other primary source materials. The finding aid to an individual collection includes a detailed description of the collection, explains how it is organized, and outlines its contents, listing locations within a collection where relevant materials may be found. The Northwestern University Archives has about 1,000 collections with finding aids. Please note that not all of the Archives' finding aids are on line yet."

(http://www.archieven.nl/nl/help?id=23 )
