Discussion

Brian Young Jan 19, 2010:
A guess I would agree with "A guess". "Guess" has several uses in English. Sometimes it is used in the pure sense ( a wild assed guess), like how many marbles do I have in the bag behind my back? At other times it is used in the sense of an estimate, as in "I would guess that she is 25 years old", which is obviously an estimate based on appearance and other factors. I don't think that "a blur" or "a mess" are acceptable here.
In some sense, an estimate is an estimate, but most people do make the distinction between various degrees of precision. Sometimes people are asked for what is called "a ball park figure", i.e. a rough estimate. If it is at least within some vague range (inside the ballpark), then it's good enough. At other times an estimate is based on extensive calculations.

a guess/an estimate

It comes from the verb "at sjusse" / "at sjusse sig frem til" = gætte.

See Nudansk ordbog.

a blur

My guess is that it means that the dates are a blur, i.e., unclear.

a mess

Could it possibly be an error...for the word sjusk, which means a mess, messy?? =)

a rough estimate

A rough estimate is an estimate that is not very precise, an approximate estimate like a 'sjus' or a 'slag på tasken' in Danish.
So I think a 'rough estimate' is closer to 'sjus' than just 'estimate'.
A gues is not precise enough since it is too spontanous - but it requires some thinking/calculating to make even a rough estimate ...
