Catalan term

espitlleres

Catalan to English Art/Literary Military / Defense
Dictionary definition: Obertura rectangular llarga i estreta feta en un mur o en una porta perquè hi passi la llum i per a mirar i disparar des de dins cap a fora

I cannot think of what the word in English could be for these slits, or openings in castle walls.

Thanks in advance.

loop-holes

Hi Ailish,
as I know you also understand Portuguese I think I can help you by saying that espittleres are "seteiras" in Portuguese. I think the best translation into English is loop-hole

As far as I am aware embrasures are those openings in castle walls that were destined to firing canon balls. Loop-holes are mainly described as for shooting arrows.

You can take a look at :

Hope this helps you a bit!
