Discussion

MJ Barber (asker) Nov 12, 2023:
Yes, the second google hit is "public crime", but that is from a Portuguese site - there are no hits from English-speaking countries, where "Public offences" refer to e.g. loitering, soliciting, etc. I was looking for what would be the equivalent in English. But thank you.
philgoddard Nov 12, 2023:
I found a definition of the Portuguese term in the second Google hit - you're supposed to carry out basic research before posting questions here.

You can also Google "public crime Portugal", and again the second hit defines and explains it.

crime of a public nature

I suggest a literal translation in this case. There are plenty of online references to "crime of a public nature" in legal contexts.

Example Sentences

" in case of premeditated crime of a public nature adjudged by a conviction having the force of res judicata." (UN Statistics Division)

"In order that an action for damages may lie upon a false charge or accusation of a crime of a public nature, it is indispensable that the final decree of acquittal dismissal in such case should declare that it is false and slanderous." https://lawlibrary.chanrobles.com/index.php?option=com_conte...

crime of public nature, publicly committed crime

Nesse contexto, "crime de natureza pública" em português pode ser traduzido para o inglês como "crime of public nature" ou "publicly committed crime." A expressão sugere que o crime é de interesse público e não apenas uma questão privada entre as partes envolvidas.
