Verbatim quote of the 2nd sentence of my webref (with my emphasis):
"Category exclusivity dictates that the sponsor is the only company within its product or service category that has a relationship with the property or event. "

Where 'product or service category' refers to the type of business carried out by the sponsoring company, generally known in Spanish as its giro.

It means, for example, that if my (fictitious) company 'JL Sportswear Inc.' sponsors a tiddlywinks tournament on a 'category exclusive' basis, I am assured that there will be no competing advertising associated with the tournament from the likes of Nike, Adidas, and other companies that are also suppliers of sportswear.

'category exclusivity' no doubt explains why, during the recent FIFA World Cup, we only saw adverts from Coca-Cola and Visa - and nothing from Pepsi or Mastercard. Under the relevant sponsorship rules (similar to those for the Olympics) there could only be one soft-drinks company, and one credit card company, associated with the event.
