mounting
In a crown or tiara, I think it's called the mounting, which is also the word for putting the thing together.

As Abe(L) notes in the discussion section, it refers to the frame/framework of the headgear in question to which the gems and other details are added, which I think is called a mounting in jewellery parlance. Confirmation from any jewellery buffs out there would be nice.

Note from asker:
Your thoughts are the same as mine. From my very basic knowledge of jewellery I'd come up with setting/mount, but I would like confirmation from someone who "really" knows. ;-) The doc is already in with this flagged - I don't get the luxury of 24h... :-( |
