polymer banknotes

English to French Other Finance (general) Finance
Our initial findings confirm that a switch to longer-lasting polymer banknotes is justified in the first year of launch, with savings clearly established from the outset.

thanks
neutral Daryo : if one wanted to indulge in nitpicking, one could point out that "natural paper" is *ALSO* a polymer!! (Plants are made of a polymer called cellulose ....etc) // Autres chats à fouetter / YOU could try to correct all the wrong apostrophe's on shop sign's?

On that basis both the English and French terms (as used by the banknote producers) are wrong. I think you need to write a sharp letter to the Governors of the Bank of England and the Banque de France, who, I assume, know how to use apostrophes correctly

billets de banque en plastique

"billet de banque en polymère" se trouve mais 1) c'est une traduction littérale et 2) c'est incorrect puisqu'en français il faudrait écrire "en polymèreS" (ce qu'on ne trouve quasiment jamais)

agree Daryo : you can't say that either translation is wrong, but I prefer this one. "le plastique" associates to man-made polymers (which is the intended meaning in this ST), no confusion possible with "natural polymers" (= good old paper!)

billets (de banque) en matière synthétique

the most accurate

as in:

Le gouvernement du Canada avait annoncé dans son budget 2010 que le pays se tournerait vers les billets en matière synthétique qui sont bien plus durables que ceux de papier.

in fact you have here a very good translation for the whole of

As for the accuracy of equating "polymers" with man-made / synthetic fibers:

You may think that polymers are so common that they grow on trees... Well, you're right. When we say that polymers are everywhere, we mean it. In fact polymers have been in nature from the beginning. All living things - plants, animals, and people - are made of polymers.

Polymers in Plants

Plants are made of a polymer called cellulose. This is the tough stuff that wood and stems - and Paul's tree house! - are made from. Cellulose is also what makes fibers like cotton and hemp that we can twist into threads and weave into clothing. And many plants also make starch. Potatoes, corn, rice, and grains all have a lot of starch. Starch is also a polymer.

neutral AllegroTrans : So you are contradicting both the source term and the term as widely used in both languages (by banks and official bodies) in favour of your "more accurate" term. I don't think the translator would want to tell her client that somehow

I could tell you few real stories about "clients always being right", maybe another time. Just because it's widely used doesn't make it accurate.
neutral Sanjin Grandić : Explanation: the most accurate??? I don't think so. Je mange mon goûter avant de prononcer " billets (de banque) en matière synthétique"-https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billets_de_banque_en_dollars_c...

well, you are certainly free to join bankers and ignore the annoying fact that even the "old school/ordinary" banknotes are also made of "polymers" // "Si vous voyez un banquier sauter par la fenêtre ..." applies also to linguistics?
