Der Terminus taucht in einem Scheidungsantrag (Complaint for divorce) aus Massachusetts mehrfach auf. Die Seiten sind immer überschrieben mit "divorce/separate support summons" und auch im Fließtext steht etwa: "This order is in effect until (...) the entry of a judgment of divorce or separate support (...)"

Massachusetts does not have a procedure called “Legal Separation.” Separate Support is a lawsuit to get support for you or your children. It can also prohibit your spouse from putting any limits on your personal freedom. It is not a divorce.
