Maybe the judge's 'conviction' would be viewed a different way in Anglo-Am law, namely the judge exercises discretion over what items of evidence carry weight and which don't.
Example sentence:
Under the doctrine of the separation of powers, the ability of judges to exercise discretion is an aspect of judicial independence.
