'You look like some kind of old, washed-up golf pro who drank his way off the tour and is one step away from writing a suicide note ...'
La parte sulla quale avrei bisogno di un chiarimento è 'drank his way off the tour'.

Hello everyone, I need a clarification about the meaning of the sentence below, which I am translating as an exercise. The sentence is part of the lines of an actor in a sit-com who is insulting an old man with whom he had an argument in the past:
'You look like some kind of old, washed-up golf pro who drank his way off the tour and is one step away from writing a suicide note ...'
The part of the sentence that is not completely clear to me is ‘drank his way off the tour’. Does the expression only mean that the old man the insult is addressed to seems a failure who destroyed his career due to drinking problems or I am missing other meanings?
Thanks in advance for any answer I will be given!

Something went wrong...
