This is difficult to translate unless you give us more context - we need to know what the paragraph says in Italian.

a familiar phrase - for walking on a path that consists of continually going forward through life concentrating on doing what you're doing day to day without necessarily having a detailed plan (this also retains the foot/shoe connection with the subject matter)
