Source text - French Un soir, environ cinq ans après la mort de Betty, j'ai bien cru que ma dernière heure venait d'arriver. Et Dieu sait que je m'attendais pas du tout à ça. Je me trouvais dans la cuisine avec Henri et j'épluchais tranquillement quelques trucs en lui prêtant une oreille distraite. La supériorité de la poésie sur le reste, ça faisait deux cents fois qu'il m la démontrait. Le plus terrible, c'est qu'il avait raison, mais j'avais toujours refusé de l'admettre. Je pouvais écrire des romans et des paquets de nouvelles, mais j'étais incapable d'aligner un seul poème valable, c'était un terrain que je sentais pas très bien. J'éprouvais une admiration sans bornes pour ces types qui trouvaient le moyen de vous descendre en quelques phrases, qui vous coupaient la respiration, l'ennui c'est qu'ils étaient tous à moitié cinglés. Une des questions que je me posais était de savoir si la poésie rendait fou ou si c'était l'inverse que se produisait. Enfin ce que je voyais, c'était qu'un écrivain pouvait encore préparer le repas du soir, tandis qu'un poète, c'était tout juste bon à glisser les pieds sous la table. Il s'était planté devant la fenêtre avec son verre à la main et pissait consciencieusement sur le genre romanesque, mais j'avais d'autres chats à fouetter, il commençait à se faire tard et j'avais encore une bonne centaine de petits bidules à beurrer. J'ai jeté un œil à ses cheveux blancs et ce soir-là, je l'ai laissé dérailler, je lui ai pas demandé de venir m'aider au lieu de me les briser, j'ai pensé que je devais faire un effort le soir de son anniversaire. Henri venait d'avoir soixante-deux ans et j'avais invité quelques personnes pour nous aider à souffler les bougies. J'espérais que j'aurais la chance d'en retenir une ou deux pour régler le problème de la vaisselle. Le frigo était plein à craquer. En l'ouvrant, je me suis aperçu qu'un filet de vinaigrette dégringolait sur la boîte du gâteau et j'en ai eu les poils du ventre hérissés pendant un quart de seconde. Le carton me paraissait déjà un peu ramolli par endroits. Je l'ai sorti en vitesse, j'ai arraché le couvercle sans plus attendre, tout en claquant le frigo du talon. Heureusement, le gâteau n'avait rien. Heureusement, car je me souvenais très précisément combien il m'avait coûté. Je connaissais toujours le prix des choses quand je traversais des périodes difficiles. Et l'anniversaire d'Henri coïncidait avec le passage de mon découvert bancaire dans la zone rouge. C'était un gâteau superbement décoré, moderne dans l'esprit mais somptueusement baroque. J'avais passé un bon moment dans le magasin à leur expliquer ce que je voulais, à croire qu'ils n'avaient jamais vu une locomotive. Pour finir, j'avais dû leur faire un dessin. J'avais précisé que je voulais les roues en nougatine et qu'ils me mettent un bon paquet de chantilly pour le panache de fumée. Henri, les trains, c'est ce qu'ils aiment. Je ne pouvais pas faire moins. Pas le jour de son anniversaire. J'étais vraiment content que le gâteau soit intact, j'ai décidé de le lui montrer. Il me tournait le dos. À ce que j'entendais, le roman était une forme d'obésité cultivée par les gars dans mon genre. Je lui ai posé une main sur l'épaule: – Hé! arrête une minute, je voudrais te montrer quelque chose!... Je tenais la loco d'une main et il y avait tout un tas de reflets accrochés sur la crème, je voulais voir la tête qu'il allait faire. Ses épaules tombaient mais on sentait cette flamme à l'intérieur, c'était tout à faire curieux, je ne sais combien de fois j'avais éprouvé cette sensation en regardant Henri, peut-être une bonne centaine des fois, et les premiers temps ça me laissait sur le cul. J'espérais qu'un type que écrit des romans envoyait au moins quelques étincelles, enfin j'en étais pas sûr du tout. Ils ont de la chance, ceux qui se consument de l'intérieur, ils brillent d'une belle lumière, on les reconnaît plus facilement. Henri s'est tourné doucement vers moi. J'ai eu l'impression que ça durait des siècles. Et puis d'un seul coup, l'air m'a manqué, une angoisse épouvantable m'a carrément pris à la gorge, et dans la même seconde je me suis retrouvé dans la peau d'un bateau qui se fait éperonner. Je suis tombé à genoux. Henri m'a demandé ce que j'étais encore en train de fabriquer, alors que j'étais tout simplement en train de mourir. Je l'ai su tout de suite. La douleur épouvantable que m'écrasait la poitrine n'était rien, ou si peu de chose comparée à la trouille que m'engloutissait. J'ai vu le gâteau glisser de mes mains et tomber bien à plat devant moi. Bien sûr, j'avais pu remarquer à quelques signes que j'étais plus tout jeune, mais quarante ans c'est quand même pas le bout du monde, et pour dire la vérité, on ne peut jamais être tout à fait sûr qu'on a vécu ses plus belles années. J'ai eu la chance à ce moment-là de pouvoir quitter mon corps. Il paraît que tous les écrivains ne sont pas capables de faire ça, mais je ne suis pas étonné, il y a toujours des types pour se trouver en dessous du strict minimum dans n'importe quelle branche, ils sont là uniquement pour vous faire chier. J'ai vu le regard d'Henri s'assombrir. J'ai vu de quelle manière je suis parti en avant et comment je me suis rattrapé in extremis, prenant appui sur un seul bras. J'ai vu un filet de sueur scintiller sur mon nez. D'une certaine manière, j'étais déjà mort. Mon âme était en train de se briser en mille miettes. Pour finir, mes dernières forces m'ont abandonné et je me suis étalé de tout mon long sur le sol. Je me suis couché en travers de la loco, je l'ai complètement écrasée. C'était son gâteau d'anniversaire. Certaines choses ne devrait jamais arriver, me semble-t-il. Pourtant, c'était comme ça. J'ai toujours gardé un souvenir très précis de cette scène. Sa tristesse est d'un parfum sans nom. J'avais déménagé depuis la mort de Betty, peut-être bien cinq ou six fois, et puis l'envie m'avait passé. Tous les coins se ressemblaient. Les baraques, les rues, les villes, les gens, oui même les gens finissaient par se ressembler. Au fond ça simplifiait le problème. J'avais donc choisi de ne plus bouger. Cette ville-là ou une autre, environ trois cents kilomètres plus à l'ouest, dans une rue plutôt calme, une baraque sans rien de particulier... pourquoi pas, quelle différence ça faisait?... C'était comme cette chambre d'hôpital. Exactement les mêmes d'un bout à l'autre du pays. J'en avais profité pour dormir pendant presque une semaine d'affilée. Lorsque je me suis vraiment réveillé, j'ai trouvé Henri assis au pied de mon lit, en petite chemisette et plongé dans un magazine. Il y avait du soleil plein la chambre, la fenêtre était légèrement entrouverte. – Henri, je suis désolé pour le gâteau, j'ai dit. Il a levé aussitôt les yeux vers moi. Il s'était coiffé, rasé, sa chemise était propre, il avait l'air en forme. On s'est regardés quelques secondes en souriant, puis il a levé sa main en l'air et j'ai claqué dedans en rigolant. – Espèce de connard ! il a murmuré. – Bon Dieu ! j'en reviens pas moi-même !
