Testo originale - Inglese Drama doesn’t ask you for an alienated judgement, because it deals with nobody else’s case but yours. It is as if you were watching some Agatha Christie murder mystery: the inspector is moving closer and closer to the
solution, then he comes down the stage, walks into the audience, reaches your seat and says: “The murderer is you.” That’s why Brecht is wrong. Brecht sees the chorus as the real society, the community – so he reduces the play to the chorus. This is what he should do – but he does
not see that everyone in the chorus is Oedipus, Antigone, Hecuba, Medea. He ends with an abstraction –and a human abstraction is a prison. The stage is us, not an abstract calculation.
Then you can accept responsibility for yourself and the world. When this is sorted out it is a basis for a democratic relationship to the world –and democracy is not other people: it is you.
