Großraubtier

German to English Science Zoology zoology / endangered species
I recently translated "Großraubtier" as a large predator. The foundation (environmental) sent me back a message saying that large carnivore was correct and large predator is incorrect. While I do agree that large carnivore is probably better, I was just wondering if large predator is actually incorrect in the zoological world.... : )

I would appreciate any input. Thanks

OOPS- I meant omnivores... I am not sure actually why they need a translator if they are so sure : )

Somehow my last message got a bit garbled. Here's the garbled bit ungarbled: Oxf. Dict. says predator = animal that preys on others. Carni-vore = meat-eater = Fleisch-fresser. "Rauben" is "to prey". If they're so 'sure', why do they need a translator? :-(

well, see..."large predators" may be either carnivores or omnivores (bears, for example, are omnivores), so unless they want to specifically exclude the omnivores, they're not exactly correct...

Well, I'm a New Zealander, but have spent the last 12 yrs in Germany, so the fact you're American seems irrelevant to me. My Oxf. Dict. says predator=How do you prove it? Carni-vore = meat-eater = Fleisch-fresser, my eng-deu dict. says Raubtier=predator

Thank you Reuben. That is what I thought - but how do I "prove" that to them? They also of course referred to the fact that I am American (they are German). I was not sure then if predator is used in GB differently, which would surprise me..... I am very frustrated!! :(

Predator does not imply humans at all, although humans are predators.... Examples of Gro�raubtiere are lions, tigers, bears, etc.

The foundation may insist on "carnivore", but then they're insisting on sloppy translating. "Large carnivore" would be "großer Fleischfresser"

perhaps \"predator\" implies humans, whereas carnivore seems more applicable to animals?
