My husband handed me the phone, saying there was someone asking for Elizabeth Tamblin the translator. I don't really like being contacted by phone, but as I'm not working today (feeling ill), I answered.
He claimed to be Dr. M. R. (I can't include the name, can I?), calling from some kind of marketing firm in New York. He sounded very amiable, asking questions about my specialisms, etc. After about ten minutes of this friendly chat, he just asked me an obscene question. Really dista... The idiot mentioned my ProZ.com profile. I don't know how the moron got my phone number though.
So I just wanted to warn you to watch out for this sicko. He withholds his caller ID, obviously.

Intriguing! And the obscene question was not related in any way to translation? (I assume it was sexual, given that you didn't want to reveal what it was?)
What accent did he have? (e.g. native speaker of English? American? something else?) That might help if he calls someone else but uses a different name. At least we can connect the two calls then.
Sorry this happened, especially when you weren't feeling well. Hopefully he won't call again.

I don't get it.
If he wanted to scam you, he would have made a job offer which would be too good to be true.
But if he wanted to enjoy making obscene calls, why would he waste ten minutes of his and your precious time? Or was it something said over the phone that made him horny?

No the question was certainly not translation-related. He'd been asking pertinent questions about my work, and then out of the blue, in the same tone of voice, asked a question that is too obscene to repeat here. He was obviously out to get a shock reaction, but I just hung up.
I would say the accent was American or possibly Canadian. My husband, who spoke to him first, says "educated American", but that could have been a put-on accent, I suppose. The funny thing is, he knew all the right things to ask about translation, got my details from my ProZ profile (which, by the way, hadn't been visited today at that point), then went to the bother of finding my phone number somewhere else.

I'm sure I didn't say anything suggestive, unless he's someone who gets turned on by talking about translation.

For the record, I could use Skype from here, Sao Paulo, Brazil to call you, and you wouldn't notice the difference. Your husband would say it sounded like a polite Californian.
I often get text messages via Skype, supposedly from "women" located in Ghana or Nigeria to the tune of "I must have sex with you tonight". Sometimes they include a suggestive profile picture. I simply click on "Block", including the "Report abuse" option, and never hear from them ... See more Simply ignore.

Your phone is a much older contrivance than Skype, so it doesn't have such modern features. Long-distance calls using it may be expensive.
If that caller ever appears again in your life, simply note the date and time when you received the call, and relay the case to law enforcement. ▲ Collapse

So what if next time I get approached by one of these thousands of female scammers that bother us day in and day out, the lady uses a false name that happens to be same as yours? Would you like to see your name in the board for the wrong reasons?
That sort of things happen to everybody. Then, they probably make a funny youtube on the reaction of the victim on the phone. Stupid jokes are everywhere. I would forget about psychos and calls to police and have a life!

I'm sure this saddo won't call again, but I've been looking into tracing Caller ID Withheld numbers. Turns out the phone company can see the number of the caller and will not give it to me, but will pass the number on to the relevant authorities. I'd like to see this kind of person publicly shamed.
