You are a translator, because you are not able to do something better, is the view of the public.

Even the president of the US does not know the difference between an interpreter and a translator. When he met Sarkozy a couple of years ago, they were waiting for the "translator" dixit Obama, who had been delayed due to an act of God.

However, the interpreter still enjoys a higher esteem of the public than the translator.
