Why We Fight is a series of seven propaganda films produced by the US Department of War from 1942 to 1945, during World War II. It was originally written for American soldiers to help them understand why the United States was involved in the war, but US President Franklin Roosevelt ordered distribution for public viewing.
“The Battle of China” (中国战事)是其中第六集。这一集,不但解说词编得好,而且字幕上的中译文也极好,令人心潮澎湃、热血沸腾!我相信,看了这部纪录片的观众,绝大多数都会认为支持中国人民的抗战是理所当然,而不会认为那是“大撒币”浪费人力物力等各种资源!
对于"Why We Fight - The Battle of China",有着各种不同的译法。我最欣赏的就是"我们为何而战——中国战事”。也有人将"Why We Fight - The Battle of China"合并后译为《中国为何而战》。这种译法不符合原意。首先,“Why We Fight”是系列名称,“The Battle of China"则是第六集的名称。其次,“Why We Fight”中的“We”,主要是指美军官兵,也可泛指全体美国人民。根据维基百科的介绍,此纪录片原来的目标观众是美军官兵,目的是让他们理解,美国为何要参与这场并非是在美国本土上进行的反法西斯战争。就中国战场而言,美军参与中国的抗战并非是为了“拱火”,也不是鼓动“代理人战争”,而是为了帮助遭到法西斯军队铁蹄蹂躏的中国人民。简言之,就是“路见不平,拔刀相助”!只要看看上面那张照片就可理解,“我们”(指美军官兵)为何要在中国战场参战。罗斯福总统后来决定让此纪录片供美国公众观看,是因为美国政府对中国抗战的支持,也需要得到广大美国人民的理解和支持。
