For direct clients Nov 12, 2021

All my projects for direct clients are proofread by a fellow-translator. I don't have just one colleague with whom I collaborate; the proofreader depends on the subject matter. Of course, I've incorporated the extra costs for the four-eyes principle in my rate.

Sometimes I get a trusted colleague to proofread the odd translation. But most of the time I do my own.

Software-Assisted Proofreading Only Nov 12, 2021

I frequently use Grammarly + Microsoft Office built-in proofing tools for assisted-proofreading needs. These tools are sufficient for any volume of text (as long as your computer has a large RAM and a fast CPU).

Almost all my work is proofread by another pair of eyes (the only exceptions are very short texts = a few pages), my quote always includes revision by a second linguist, unless the client has expressly indicated otherwise (some translation agencies have their own proofreader). I have an arrangement with a trusted colleague (we worked in-house together for 20 years) where we proofread each other's work. When she is not available I use the services of two Proz members with whom I have built a good working relationship over the years and they have done the same. I for one have learned a lot with their revisions, hope the same has happened with them. Quality-wise, it's the BEST decision I've ever made...Collapse

I'm not much of a fan of Grammarly, but I use PerfectIt and the Microsoft tools.

I try to produce a finished translation as I go along, marking the sticky parts for further attention. Once the sticky parts are resolved, the document is quite clean before I start proofreading it. Then I always proofread twice: once for the meaning and finally for errors.

missing alternative answer(s) Nov 12, 2021

missing alternative answer(s):
a) always,
b) it is a part of my services.
it is not so much a question of costs, it pays in the long run AND mostly I compensate colleagues by checking their own work

With a little help of a friend Nov 12, 2021

If in doubt, then one of my friends, also a professional translator/editor check my translation. The rate? It works both ways, so no charge.

Never Nov 12, 2021

What on Earth for? My work is perfect.

I check it myself and correct any mistakes I find. Why would I need to get anyone else involved?

This is like asking a bus driver whether they get someone to turn the steering wheel for them.

It's hard to pull oneself out of a mire by your own hair, and that's why you need a proofreader to check your text. I have three colleagues of mine whom I trust (they won't try to steal my client from me and they are great translators).
