Some weeks have seemed quieter than usual this quarter, but November was one of the busiest months I've ever had. I don't remember ever having had to turn down as much work in such a short space of time because I simply couldn't do it all.

Very erratic.... Dec 13, 2011

I've found that work has been very erratic since the economic downturn began. It's either extremely busy or rather quiet! I would have worried about quieter times in previous years but now take the opportunity to relax and regroup

It has been a very quiet month for me so far. A bit disquieting. But I take this opportunity to brush up on my translating skills and to work on a literary project of mine.

Me too. It's been very quiet here since the middle of last week but I'm going home for Xmas next week so am not bothered, in fact I'm not really expecting any work other than bits and bobs from my regulars - for example I just translated 11 words for one client! I've earned more or less as much this year as in 2010 so if I don't get any work for the next 3 weeks it wouldn't really be an issue.

However, if January turns out to be slack too, then I'll start to worry and pull the stops out!

The quietest month for me this year was September. Since then I have been forced to turn down many offers of work since the volume was far more than I could have handled. October was my highest earning month, closely followed by November. December will be lower only because I intend to take a full week off from Christmas Eve until New Year. Mind you, things can change very quickly in our profession, so I shall try to avoid falling into the trap of complacency.

A decrease compared to what?
There has been a sharp increase in my workflow compared to the third quarter, which was dead.
There has been a slight decrease in my workflow compared to the first half of the year, in which business started to pick up following a dead 2010.
A like-on-like comparison with the same period of 2010 shows a marked increase in my workflow.
Compared to the heady pre-crisis days of 2006 or 2007, my workflow is down.

very quiet for me Dec 13, 2011

but I've caught up with my invoicing, accounts, marketing, and have had such a lovely time for relaxation - I did some tremendous amount of form filling, correspondence which I had left out for quieter times, and I'm happy I'm going to enjoy a quiet Xmas this year - looks like it and I'll relax even more - I'll be ready for a prosperous new year

New work, yes. Current work, no. Dec 13, 2011

Due to large project I have been/am working on since mid-October, I take on new, mainly smaller projects only sporadically. This project keeps me busy for a few hours every day, but also allows me to catch up with my invoicing, marketing and research while giving me time to relax - knowing that the last "installment" for this project will arrive in my bank account in January.

In Italy there´s definitely a decrease Dec 13, 2011

... at least that is what I hear from colleagues and agencies around here. For myself there has been around 2/3 less during the last quarter (actually started in September), compared to the first half of the year. Personally I´ve also had a big loss due to payment problems with one of my clients for work done in June/July, but that has more to do with the client himself and not the general situation.
