Düsseldorf has the biggest Japanese community in Europe.

Yes May 8, 2011

Yes, but it will not be a Proz.com event. I plan to attend our annual EPITA seminar on May 21. Anyone who can make it to El Paso, Texas is invited.

Sort of May 8, 2011

I am thinking about it - there is a proz event in October in Valencia where I live so I might go to that, although there is also a conference on legal translation in Portugal which could be interesting too.

A firm believer in the adage "the best laid plans of mice and men...", I tend not to make firm commitments to anything other than working deadlines because something can crop up at any time to change all your plans, so why bother?

In fact, I don't like making arrangements at the best of times, because on so many occasions I have had to drag myself off to a dinner party, meeting, concert or whatever when I didn't really feel like going at all...

Too many maybe... May 8, 2011

Due to a series of money and timing issues, I ended up not going to any conferences last year and I felt the lack. This year, I might be going to too many:

I have already attended:

TAF (Triangle Area Freelancers: local organization which is writing oriented, but welcomes all freelancers)
CATI (Carolina Association of Translator's and Interpreters)

Next up:

U.N.E.T.I.C.A: Dixième Forum international sur la déontologie et les bonnes pr

Still Planning:
Translate in the Catskills (maybe)
ATA - Boston

Somewhere in there I am hoping to sneak in a writing retreat, but that is probably overly optimistic. Oh well, there is always next year.

Powwows May 8, 2011

I attend the powwow in Cardiff, Wales, every month but have no plans to attend any conferences this year as yet. I find the majority of them incredibly over-priced, without the travel and accommodation expenses!

ITI May 8, 2011

Just got back from the ITI conference in Birmingham (UK) this weekend: there were some really excellent presentations, and it was great to meet up with some old colleagues and meet new ones.

Too busy translating May 8, 2011

I attended conferences when I had a full-time job as a translator and could use my annual leave. Sometimes my office paid for them or considered that I was on duty. But since going free lance 19 years ago, I haven't been able to afford them. Not only are they expensive, but there's the loss of income to consider.

Frankly, I don't know how you guys manage to do it!

My idea of a vacation is to use frequent flyer miles and stay somewhere as a guest, not paying for my accommodations. Even that can be expensive.

Only local ones May 9, 2011

If there is a pow-wow in Madrid, I usually pop along. It only costs me the price of a clara.

The Portugese event does look interesting but the organisers are too stingy to lay on simultaneous interpretation.
