I should learn about CAT tools. Because I am usually given translation in a paper format, I do not use them, and I have a basic knowledge.

Fortunately, I do not have the time to learn (because I am always translating), but I think I should find some time and do it.

And maybe I am not really flexible, I mean, I have worked with the same clients for a long time, so when a new one comes up, I am a bit slow to adapt myself to the new "terminology".

More contacts Mar 17, 2010

I should make more contacts. First thing.
Then things come alone and can be faced one at a time, with a lot of patiente and effort.

Lack of computing skills Mar 17, 2010

I can't work as fast as I should because I don't have the right technological skills. I often feel (and know) that I'm doing things in a round-about time-wasting way. Unfortunately, it's the only way I know and I'm getting too old to learn new tricks.:-)

I see people with fancy toolbars and plug-ins that enable them to put the curser over a word and immediately access several dictionaries for definitions, synonyms and possible translations. I have to bring up their websites from my saved bookmarks and type in the word(s) I'm interested in.

I also have all sorts of problems that younger computer-wise translators don't have: formatting, downloads, directories, zipping/unzipping etc are all a bit of a mystery. None of it seems easy to me - I can handle the transformation of the text into another language as fast as other translators but lacking computing skills means it all takes a bit longer.

If only I'd been born later!

Lack of computer skills? Mar 17, 2010

Yes, CAT Tools are great stuff, but I know that they should have been designed for people who do not have exceptional IT experience.

I have to admit that I usually do dislike expensive and overgrown SW tools like Trados, but I find it also very useful when it comes to speed.

(This shouldn't be an endorsment, on the contrary! I am free software person and I'd rather pay 800€ to people who made great stuff and gave it away for the benefit of us all)

My short attention span. I deal with a lot of long documents and after a while (too short a while I'm afraid) I get bored and distracted.

I'm with David Mar 17, 2010

Same here - I just don't know when to say 'no'. As a result, I also agree that there are simply not enough hours in the day, but then even if there were more, I'd undoubtedly fill those up to the brim too!

Same as David and Victoria Mar 17, 2010

Unable to say "no" to a client.
I guess every workaholic is quite lazy deep inside: "Hey, let me quickly make another $10000, and then I will really take my time and blissfully do nothing..."

I cannot work speedy Mar 17, 2010

I always use many dictionaries to find the right definition...I agree with Sheila...but is it only a generation problem or is it professionalism too?
