On average 6-8 hours a day, but being at home it can vary a lot from one day to the other; on wednesdays for example when kids are at home I move frome being a translator to becoming a (midly annoyed) taxi driver, or when DH is working late then I keep on working till late in the evening...

5-7 hours. My working hours are pretty much defined by school hours. Although sometimes I play catch-up in the evenings.

Of course this figure varies, but usually no more than 8 hours per day. I don't like to overdo it one or two days in a row and then be unproductive on the following day. I also try to avoid working too long so I don't have any physical discomfort such as a backache or eye fatigue. There are also administrative and research tasks that need my attention that I don't include under the category of work proper because they are not what immediately generates my salary, though they do contribute toward... Even though our job is somewhat unstable by definition, I believe we can find stability within the instability.Collapse

I put 8-11 as an average. There are days I work 20 and others when I only have to do 4 or 5. If I'm working from home the fact I don't have to commute makes a massive difference to how productive I am. So does not having any banter or chit chat with colleagues (one has to be sociable!). I also have fewer distractions (I don't have to answe the phone or reply to e-mails immediately etc) when I'm not in the office.

I am wondering though - you guys who are putting in 12 hours a day regularly must be making a mint!

Usually? There is no usually. My work day can vary between 0 and 15 hours depending on what there is to be done. That's just how it is.

I usually work from 10a.m. to 10p.m. but not just on translations. Usually the 6 - 10p.m. time slot is for music - practicing, recording, writing, etc. And of course I do take meal breaks and other short breaks during the day, including some to do a bit of exercise.
