Source text - German Interview Manfred Cordes, VITA für dental business 1/2007
Was plant VITA für diesen Megaevent?
Translation - English Interview with VITA’s Manfred Cordes for the Dental Industry 1/2007
1. VITA has been manufacturing high-quality dental restorations for over eighty years. In all this time, which of the company’s developments stand out foremost?
A dentist founded VITA in 1924. He believed that the porcelain teeth available at the time were not natural enough and lacked aesthetic appeal. So he sought out an investor willing to support his goal of changing this, and that is where the relationship with the Rauter family got its start. The first VITA tooth assortments were released prior to the Second World War. They were the first dental replacements available on the market featuring more than one coating layer, which provided for an aesthetically and qualitatively superior product.
During the Second World War the company headquarters in Essen was damaged extensively from aerial bombardment and was relocated to the Swiss border. Tooth production resumed shortly after this relocation. In the decade following the war the artificial tooth was an important development. To this day the artificial tooth as it was developed at that time still dominates the market for full prosthodontics. VITA made several important contributions to material science underlying this development; flexibility and durability were required if the material was achieve widespread use. Also at this time the first VITA shades were released. The 16 VITA Classic shades developed 50 years ago still represent 80% of all the shades used worldwide to this day.
In the 1960s another important contribution made by VITA was the development of metal ceramics. Efforts were required to make sure the metal ceramics we developed in cooperation with Degussa were in fact a marketable solution. The metal ceramics commercially available today known as VMK were originally called VITA Metal Ceramic – the ‘V’ formerly stood for VITA. VITA’s development of metal ceramics was a pioneering accomplishment that laid the groundwork a variety of other future developments, particularly full ceramics.
In the 1980s VITA once again led the industry as the first company to offer different shade wheels for various materials. In other words, a selection of shades not just for teeth, but also for veneer ceramics and so on. The pressing need to establish a single colour system to assure shade consistency across materials was addressed by VITA with the release of the VITAPAN system in the 1980s. The basic idea was simple: we have 16 colours; logically, these colours should be valid for all the materials we use so that everything stays consistent.
In 1998 VITA decided to embark on its own, unique path with the development of the 3D Master System. This was the first attempt to replace the standard practice of allocating random points on the surface of the tooth with a new system that would serve as a foundation for the entire process chain from shade determination and communication to reproduction and implantation. The 3D Master System is still unique to this day.
The newest addition to VITA’s long list of developments is the VITAEASY Shade system, which enables shade determination electronically. The release of VITAEASY Shade was an important contribution to the effort to establish an objective basis for the perception of colour, which is actually a highly subjective process at its root.
2. The procedure shade selection/shade reproduction/value control is extremely sensitive, calling for perfect communication between the dentist and laboratory. How do VITA products address this challenge? Which points of communication demand particular attention?
For years the focus of our attention lay exclusively with the dental technician. In the process chain beginning with shade determination and moving to shade communication, reproduction and implantation, our sole focus for decades was directed at the first step: shade determination. It became apparent with time, particularly following discussions with clients, that if the first part of the process chain, shade selection, is already difficult, then the dental technician is unable to perform his role effectively, because A3 ‘but somewhat more yellow’ is not quantifiable. We coined the term ‘dental team building’ for this reason, the goal being to improve the level of cooperation between the dentist and dental technician. You simply get better results when, for example, the dental technician has seen the patient once before. For this reason I wouldn’t choose the term ‘interface,’ but perhaps ‘point of intersection.’ That is, the intersection between the patient and the two team players: the dentist and the dental technician.
3. VITA is also assuming a leading position in the market for full ceramics. What should one expect in this regard in the future?
In the field of full ceramics we are also a market leader. I think the first important step to promote wide adoption of full ceramics – a step taken not only by VITA, but by others as well – was to closely examine inlays and onlays as an aesthetic alternative to amalgam and other filling materials. The second step was to manufacture fully ceramic crowns and bridges that are easy to work with. There is a tremendous potential for growth in the market for ceramic crowns and bridges, particularly in Germany. We estimate that 18 percent of all crowns and bridges in Germany are currently full ceramic. A figure much higher than 50 percent is certainly feasible. However, this would require – and this must be emphasised repeatedly – a faith in the material. The material and its unique requirements still need to be examined with greater rigour. A university teacher once said, “You need to think in terms of ceramics and get the alloy out of your head!” Opportunities certainly abound, and initial discussions concerning the extent to which ceramics can be introduced in implantology are by all means already taking place.
4. An important topic in the field of dentistry is standards. In this area VITA is a market leader, having developed a number of standards with respect to dental shades and full ceramics. Why are standards so important? What are your plans for encouraging further progress in this area?
The problem begins with a basic question: is a standard in fact in place when one believes a standard has been established and is recognised? The VITA Classic Shades are essentially offered universally and are often simply identified as the VITA shades or V shades. But when you look at the colours more closely, you quickly see that the A3 from VITA is not precisely the same as the A3 offered by many competitors. As the rule they are all based on the VITA classic shade scale, however. Up to now we’ve counted on the voluntary cooperation of manufacturers. However, current developments show clearly that market competition has led to the forging various alternate paths. In my opinion present-day efforts to more closely replicate the original tooth shade are not incorrect, but also not particularly innovative. In the final tally a huge chance has been lost – at least temporarily. It would have been much more beneficial for the entire dental industry if cooperative efforts had been made to concentrate on a forward-looking, universal system. VITA has extended a conciliatory hand to more than one competitor in recent months since the release of our 3D-MASTER shade system. The fact is, we will manufacture our classic shade wheel for as long as there is a demand for it.
In any event, we’ve been making efforts to implement standards in the field of full ceramics for quite some time. For example, we published a book in cooperation with the German ceramic consortium in which specialised terms are defined; a tried and tested method of communication is codified, ranging from preparation to terminology, which materials are which, what they are appropriate for and how they can be used. The book was immediate success in professional circles and the first edition was quickly sold out.
Above all, standards start when uniformity is introduced to conceptual definitions. Communication cannot take place when the method of communication is not standardised. When we both employ the same word, but each of us takes the word to mean different things, communication is effectively sabotaged. Allow me to return to my earlier example: when a dentist and a dental technician each know the term A3, but both have different notions of its meaning, sound communication can’t take place.
5. VITA is not only successful in Germany, but also worldwide. Two-thirds of all VITA products are sold internationally. How does the future look for VITA internationally? What are the company’s international goals, specifically in China, for example?
In principle we see two potential sources of growth, the first being full ceramics, as mentioned several times before. Globally, there is tremendous potential for full ceramics. The second potential source of growth is without a doubt in the area of prosthodontic supply. The markets in Central Europe and North America have already made considerable progress in this regard. For this reason we intend to shift our focus to other markets where the growth potential in prosthodontic supply has not yet been fully tapped. Due to the size of its market China has naturally drawn our attention, but India is also rapidly gaining in importance. If greater economic stabilisation is achieved in South America there is a tremendous potential for expansion in that region as well. China is important for us because it is now the third most important consumer country behind Germany and the USA. Our interest in China is directed at the domestic market and we consider it our responsibility to pursue a pricing policy is globally equitable. From an economic perspective the bottom line is that free markets are the best thing that can happen because they allow other regions of the world to enjoy a share of prosperity. With wealth being produced at such a fantastic rate in China a large domestic market is taking shape in which customers are increasingly able to afford quality German products.
6. In terms of international recognition an important date coming up in March of 2007 when the International Dental Show (IDS) takes place in Cologne. What are VITA’s plans for this event? What innovations do you plan to present to the industry?
The International Dental Show is an important opinion maker. All eyes are on IDS. Important minds in the industry are present, trade journalists report on the latest developments, and other conventions talking place elsewhere worldwide take cues from what transpires at the event. The IDS can rightfully claim to be the most important dental convention worldwide, which underscores the importance of the German dental industry as a driving force for the rest of the world. More often than not dental suppliers schedule their product release dates to coincide with the IDS.
At the IDS this year we plan to announce refinements to our existing product line in addition to new products. We’ll be taking a unique approach on a few counts. For example, teeth are normally displayed on a special baseplate made of transparent red wax. At the IDS we will display our premium product line in an entirely new way, without the standard transparent baseplate and without red wax. The new display method will be presented along with a new tooth shape and colour as well as a new posterior tooth line.
In the field of full ceramics there are several new innovations in terms CAD/CAM-enabled products. For example, we now realise that the colouration of the snag plays an important role in the determination of the final shade, particularly for the fabrication of full ceramics. If the dental technician is clueless as to the appearance of the snag on which the tooth he is fabricating will be implanted then he cannot work with complete precision. To address this problem we will be releasing a new product for use in the laboratory that can simulate the snag shade to enable fine colour adjustment for a more professional end product.
In addition we will be presenting a bleaching guide for the first time at the convention, a reference tool to help simplify the bleaching process. With this colour palette it will be possible to bleach teeth with more precision and to check over time if brightness has been retained or if renewed bleaching is necessary.
7. Collaboration with other firms active in the dental trade is of particular importance in Germany. How would you describe VITA’s relationship to the dental trade? What is VITA doing for the trade in Germany?
We are focusing energies in the areas where common interests are shared with the trade as a whole. The dental trade views the laboratory as a component of its strategic concept and is prepared to develop and invest in laboratory expertise. For example, its important that warehouse employees receive additional training from the industry at regular intervals. In recent years we’ve noticed that the trade has developed a clear strategic focus in this regard.
Particularly in terms of partnership with dental laboratories there are numerous opportunities that are not immediately apparent. This is because, from an economic perspective, there are over 50,000 dental practices in Germany but only 1,000 laboratories. In terms of equipment and materials required, however, the revenue opportunities for servicing laboratories are incomparable greater, despite the numerical discrepancy. The commercial servicing of laboratories is much more lucrative than one would believe at first glance. The industry and trade has yet to tap the full potential of this niche.
8. VITA is shaped by its long tradition but nonetheless enjoys a fresh, dynamic image. How does the company successfully combine the two?
Someone once said – and I like this quote very much – that, “Tradition is not about preserving ashes, but rather, the stewardship of the fiery core!” There are different ways to look at the issue. However, my honest opinion is that if we had to choose between being viewed as a company based on tradition and reliability or as an up-and-coming innovator, we would certainly choose the former. ‘Traditional’ and ‘reliable’ are by no means synonyms for ‘sluggish’ and ‘frumpy.’ In this connection I think there was a process of recognition at VITA that communicating facts doesn’t necessarily have to be boring. In terms of the external presentation of the company a ‘good idea’ is something useful, whether it be in terms of an advertising campaign or our IDS participation, and the use value rises in proportion to the size of the audience. To this end I certainly don’t mean sheer entertainment, which is not our goal. But to package information in an interesting and appealing way, to present things in a manner that sparks the customer’s curiosity – effective marketing is not something we intend to forego. I don’t think the traditional and the modern have to contradict. We’re aware of our long tradition, but we’re also aware of other imperatives, and its possible to effectively balance the two elements.
9. In closing, let’s look forward. What are the company’s prime concerns for the future? What general strategy will VITA pursue in coming business quarters?
One really important challenge for the future is to carefully observe the structural changes developing in the dental value-added chain. Whether they are national or international, or internal changes that need to be made by us. The question is manifold: what does one expect from the industry, what can the trade accomplish, do classic dental services remain our prime source of value creation, what will the dental technology of the future look like? Are there other uses for CAD/CAM technologies? This is also an important question to ask.
I can’t tell you what the world of tomorrow will look like. Whatever the future holds, we will strive to remain a reliable partner for all participants in this industry; that will remain a constant.
