Mit diesem Namen hatte kaum einer gerechnet. Die Schwedische Akademie vergibt den Literaturnobelpreis an Patrick Modiano. Der Franzose gilt als skeptischer Romantiker - in Deutschland war er bis heute eher unbekannt.
Stockholm/Hamburg - Den Nobelpreis für Literatur 2014 erhält Patrick Modiano. Das gab die Schwedische Akademie in Stockholm bekannt. Die Entscheidung für das Werk des 69 Jahre alten Schriftstellers gilt als große Überraschung. Es waren einerseits als übliche Verdachtige ein paar große Namen gehandelt worden, bei den Buchmachern galt kurz vor der Bekanntgabe der Kenianer Hgugi wa Thiong'o als Favorit.
Modiano wurde im Jahr 1945 in Boulonge-Billancourt bei Paris als Sohn eines jüdischen Kaufmanns und einer flämischen Schauspielerin geboren. Beide hatten sich während der deutschen Besatzungszeit kennengelernt. Dem Judentum fühlt sich Modiano nach eigener Aussage „nicht besonders stark“ verbunden. Er wuchs zunächst bei den Großeltern auf und verbrachte dann seine Jugend im Internat. Der Tod seines zehnjährigen Bruders war ein Schock für ihn.
Modiano zählt zu den bedeutendesten französischen Schriftstellern der Gegenwart. Sein Werk, schmale Romane in einer klaren, sparsamen Sprache, erscheint in Deutschland im Hanser Verlag. Zuletzt erschienen dort „Place de l'Étoile“ (2010), „Im Café der verlorenen Jugend“ (2012) und „Der Horizont“ (2013).
Der Autor erhielt zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, darunter den großen Romanpreis der Academie française und im Jahr 1978 den Prix Goncourt, für „Die Gasse der dunklen Läden“. Im Jahr 2012 wurde ihm der Österreichische Staatspreis für Europäische Literatur verliehen.
Seit 1967 arbeitet Modiano als freier Schriftsteller in Paris, er gilt in Frankreich als zeitgenossischer Klassiker und skeptischer Romantiker. Seine Erzählungen lässt er zumeist in den Vierziger- und Sechzigerjahren des 20. Jahrhunderts spielen; oft thematisierte er die Besetzung Frankreichs durch Nazi-Deutschland. „Ich versuche bei den MEnschen und den Dingen die Schicht des Vergessens zu durchstoßen“, sagte der medienscheue Autor in einem seiner weigen Interviews vor etwas mehr als einem Jahr.
Mit dem französischen Regiestar Louis Malle („Fahrstuhl zum Schafott“) schrieb Modiano 1974 zusammen das Drehbuch zu dem Weltkriegsdrama „Lacombe, Lucien“, das von einem Bauernjungen handelt, der sich während der Besetzung Frankreichs als Gestapo-Helfer verdingt. Der Film wurde vielfach ausgezeichnet und löste Debatten über die Kollaboration vieler Franzosen mit den Nazis aus.
Modiano schreibt zudem über Geschlechterbeziehungen, die daraus resultierenden Konflikte und die Sehnsucht, die damit zusammenhängt. Seine Erinnerungsbilder sind stark von der Beziehung zu seinem jüdischen Vater bestimmt, der während der deutschen Besetzung unter falschem Namen in einem Versteck lebte.
Die mehr als 20 Romane des Autoren wurden nahezu alle ins Deutsche übersetzt. Der österreichische Schriftsteller Peter Handke hat ihn fürs deutschsprachige Publikum entdeckt. Modiano ist hierzulande zwar anerkannt, konnte sich bislang aber noch nicht richtig durchsetzen. Durch den Literaturnobelpreis könnte er nun in Deutschland seinen großen Durchbruch haben - da er tatsächlich Bücher schreibt, die Hunderttausende begeistern könnten.
Modiano selbst weiß offenbar noch gar nicht, dass er den Preis erhalten hat. Die schwedische Nobel-Jury hatte Modiano vorab nicht erreichen können. „Wir konnten noch keine Verbindung zu ihm herstellen, aber wir hoffen, ihn bald zu erreichen“, sagte der Ständige Sekretär der Schwedischen Akademie, Peter Englund.
Nach Einschätzung seiner schwedischen Verlegerin könnte der Preis Modiano eine Schreck einjagen. „Ich glaube, das ist ein Schock für ihn“, sagte Elisabeth Grate, die drei seiner Bücher auf Schwedisch herausgegeben hat, der Zeitung „Svenska Dagbladet“.

Hardly anyone had counted on this name. The Swedish Academy will award the Nobel Prize in Literature to Patrick Modiano. The Frenchman is considered to be a skeptic romantic - he was rather unknown in Germany until this day.
Stockholm/Hamburg - Patrick Modiano receives the 2014 Nobel Prize in Literature. This was announced by the Swedish Academy in Stockholm. The decision for the work of the 69-year-old writer is considered a big surprise. On the one hand, a few big names had been traded as usual suspects shortly before the announcement, but bookies considered the Kenyan Ngugi wa Thiong'o as a shoo-in.
Modiano was born in 1945 in Boulonge-Billancourt, near Paris, as the son of a Jewish merchant and a Flemish actress. They had met during the German occupation period. In his own words, Modiano feels "not particularly strongly" connected to Judaism. He grew up with grandparents at first and then spent his adolescence at boarding school. The death of his ten-year-old brother was a shock for him.
Modiano is among the most famous French writers of the present. His work, slim novels in a clear, sparse language is released in Germany by Hanser Verlag1. Most recently released there were Place de l'Étoile (2010), Im Café der verlorenen Jugend2 (2012), and Der Horizont3 (2013).
The author received numerous distinctions, among them the Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française4 and in 1978 the Prix Concourt5 for Die Gasse der dunklen Laden6. In 2012 he was awarded the Austrian State Prize for European Literature.
Modiano has worked as a freelance writer in Paris since 1967. He is considered a contemporary classic and skeptic romantic in France. He sets his narratives in the 20th century, mostly in the 1940s and 1960s. He often broaches the issue of the occupation of France by Nazi Germany. "I try to penetrate the layer of forgetting in people and objects," the media-shy author said in one of his few interviews a little more than a year ago.
Modiano wrote the screenplay to the World War II drama Lacombe, Lucien together with the French star director Louis Malle (Fahrstuhl zum Schafott7), which is about a country boy who makes a living as an aid for the Gestapo during the occupation of France. The film was frequently distinguished and sparked debates over the collaboration of many Frenchmen with the Nazis.
In addition, Modiano writes about gender relations, the resulting conflicts out of it, and the longing associated with it. His memory images are strongly determined by the relationship with his Jewish father, who lived under a fake name in a hideout during the German occupation.
The more than 20 novels of the author were almost all translated into German. The Austrian writer Peter Handke has discovered him for the German-speaking public. Modiano is indeed accepted in this country, but to date could not yet gain recognition. He could now have his big breakthrough in Germany through the Nobel Prize in Literature - because he actually writes books that could inspire hundreds of thousands.
Modiano himself apparently only just found out that he has received the prize. The Swedish Nobel Committee had not been able to get a hold of Modiano. "We still could not make a connection to him, but we hope to reach him soon," Peter Englund, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy said.
According to his Swedish publisher, the prize could frighten Modiano. "I believe that is a shock for him," Elisabeth Grate said, who has published three of his books in Swedish in the newspaper Svenska Dagladet8.

Hilmar Klute ist bei der SZ Streiflichtchef außerdem selbst Buchautor. Klute kauft regelmäßig Antiquariate leer, um in Zeiten der kompletten Digitalisierung noch ein bisschen Lesestoff zum Anfassen haben.
In den ersten Jahren nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs ging Ernst Rowohlt gewohnt hemdsärmelig daran, den Deutschen das zu geben, was sie neben herkömmlicher Nahrung dringend benötigten: Lesefutter. So nannte Rowohlt die Früchte seines Verlagsprogramms gerne. Bücher sollten zum kulturellen Wohlbefinden und letztlich zur geistigen Ernährung beitragen - Umstellungen, die nach den Entbehrungen der vergangenen Jahre dringend notwendig waren. Das Ganzen musste attraktiv und preiswert zugleich sein, der Student sollte es sich leisten konnen, die Angestellte, der Arbeiter - es galt, die Herstellungskosten niedrig zu halten. Deshalb ließ Ernst Rowohlt 1950 die Rotationsmaschinen laufen und präsentierte im Sommer die ersten Bände seiner rororo-Bibliothek. Anders gesagt: Rowohlt brachte die ersten Taschenbücher auf den Markt - nicht zu jedermanns Freude.
Denn es gab damals genug Unkenrufer, die in der Abkehr vom schön gebundenen Buch die Zerfledderung der deutschen Buchkultur sahen - Ramschverkauf, Bagatellisierung und was es eben so gibt an Begriffen zur Verächtlichmachung. Zudem hielt Rowohlt in jedem Buch eine Seite für Zigarettenreklame frei, was dazu führte, dass der Bildungsbürger vor Wut in die Luft ging. Aber Rowohlt war klug genug, zum Beispiel den Juno-Raucher Gottfried Benn für eine gediegene Äußerung zum Thema Kunst und Kapital zu gewinnen, sodass Zigarettenwerbung am Ende allen einleuchtete.

Die Geschichte der Lesekultur lehrt, dass es nach Rowohlts Tabubruch elegant und hochwertig mit der Buchkunst - das Taschenbuch diente als Träger flüchtigen Lesestoffs oder erfuhr eine ästhetische Verfeinerung, für die zum Beispiel die schönen Insel-Taschenbücher stehen.
Was früher das Taschenbuch war, ist heute das E-Book Gottseibeiuns für die Freunde hochwertig gebundener Klassiker, willkommenes Trägermedium für jene, die unterwegs einen Text lesen wollen, den sie anschließend nicht mehr benötigen. Die großen Publikumsverlage bieten zu fast jeder Hardcover-Veröffentlichung das entsprechende digitale Pendant an, sind aber verhalten bis schmallippig, wenn es um die Frage nach ihrem Verhältnis zum ekeltronischen Buch geht. Sie betrachten es als Konkurrenz zum herkömmlichen Buch, fügen aber schnell hinzu, dass man es nicht ignorierien könne, wenn man auf dem Markt erfolgreich bleiben möchte. Der Anteil des E-Books am Verlagsumsatz liegt inzwischen bei knapp mehr als 16 Prozent, auch für das kommende Jahr wird das die Prognose sein. Fast alle deutsche Verlage machen die E-Book-Version preiswerter als das gedruckte Buch, in vielen Fällen um mehr als 20 Prozent.
Aber muss man das Greifbare und das Digitale so unversöhnlich gegeneinanderstellen? Hat nicht vielmehr das eine das Zeug, das andere zu befeuern? Die Schriftstellerin Judith Schalansky produziert selbst eine aufwendig gemachte Buchreihe im Verlag Matthes und Seitz, die „Naturkunden“ - das sind Texte zu zoologischen oder biologischen Themen, illustriert mit Schutafeln und mit sorgsam ausgewählten Schrifttypen versehen. Für Schalansky ist das elektronische Buch auch ein Korrektiv für den analogen Buchmarkt. Das gebundene Buch, sagt sie, müsse gegen das E-Book sein Existenzrecht behaupten, also Eigenschaften besitzen, die seine herausragende Stellung rechtfertigen. Es müsse herzeigen, was es kann.
Das aber das E-Book das gebundene oder auch nur das aufwendige Buch verdrängt habe, glauben nicht einmal die passioniertesten Kulturpessimisten. Beide Textträger werden vermutlich noch sehr lange nebeneinander existieren, es ist denkbar, dass das E-Book die Produktion von gebundenen Büchern regulieren wird. Das könnte bedeuten, dass der Anspruch an ein gebundenes Buch immer größer wird - inhaltlich und in den gewählten Präsentationsformen Druck, Bindung, Schriftbild und Illustration.

Das elektronische Buch ist ohnehin auch für die Traditionalisten ein unabkömmliches Konservierungsmittel von Texten, die in analoger Form in nahre Zukunft nicht mehr zugänglich sein werden - sehr alte Bücher und Schriften, deren Konservierung nur noch auf mittlere Sicht möglich ist. Auch die Idee, Dissertationen und wissenschaftliche Facharbeiten künftig ausschließlich digital darzustellen, lässt sich an der täglichen Erfahrung messen und goutieren. Digitale Textprogramme bieten mit ihren Such- und Speicherfunktionen deutlich mehr Effektivität als die Schrift, in der man blättert und mühsam die Quellen abgleicht.
Somit werden Verlage künftig Bücher entweder in Druckform als auch digital herausbringen oder nur digital, beispielsweise bei Texten, die an die Aktualität gebunden sind und bei denen es nützlicher ist, sie rasch zu verbreiten, als sie langfristig verfügbar zu machen. Und es wird das schön und aufwendig gemachte Buch geben mit Grafiken und erlesenen Schrifttypen, deren Darstellung auf dem Display eher wirkunsarm wäre. Dies natürlich immer unter dem Vorbehalt, dass sich auch das digitale Buch ästhetisch verfeinern und den Möglichkeiten der gedruckten Darstellung annähern kann.
Wer liest was wann wo - von dieser Frage ist der Erfolg des E-Books und der des gedruckten Buches nicht zu trennen. Eine Studie des Börsenvereins des Deutschen Buchhandels rechnet vor, dass sich nur 18 Prozent der Befragten vorstellen können, mit einem E-Book im Wohnzimmersessel zu sitzen, im Bett liegend ziehen 47 Prozent ein E-Book dem herkömmlichen Buch vor. Grundsätzlich sieht es aus, als verabschiedeten sich die Deutschen von der Idee, das gedruckte Buch biete die einzig wahre Textdarreichung. Aber es ist nicht so, dass sich die Leser von der gedruckten Version verabschieden möchten. Das Leserverhalten ist schwer berechenbar, es gibt nicht den E-Book-Leser und den stoischen Buchleser, ebenso wenig wie es den Menschen gibt, der nur die gedruckte Zeitung liest und Online-Titel meidet.
Als Ernst Rowohlt vor mehr als sechzig Jahren mit seinen Rotationsromanen auf den Markt ging, hatte er keine Ahnung, ob und wie die neue Bucherfindung Furore machen würde. Er hatte zumindest ein Geheimrezept, das andere Verlage nicht hatten: den Klebstoff Eluid Emil Lumbecks. „Die Seiten in meinen Büchern sitzen fest wie Schrauben im Holz“, sagte Rowohlt damals dem Spiegel.
Heute würde man über solcherart hemdsärmeligen Analogismus lächeln und den schönen Satz mit dem Zeigefinger von Displaywischen.

Hilmar Klute is the head Streiflicht1, also an author himself. Klute constantly buys second-hand books, in order to still have a little reading material at his fingertips in times of the complete digitalisation.
In the first years after the end of the Second World War, Ernst Rowohlt took on a typical, roll-up-your-sleeves challenge to give the Germans what they badly needed beside more traditional nourishment: reading matter2. Rowohlt thus liked to call the fruit of his published agenda. Books were supposed to contribute to the cultural well-being and ultimately to the mental nourishment – adjustments which were desperately necessary for the needs of the elapsed years. The whole issue had to be attractive and affordable at the same time, students were meant to be able to find it, clerks, labourers – it was essential to keep the manufacturing costs low. Therefore Ernst Rowohlt allowed the first volume to be published by his publishing company rororo-Bibliothek. Said elsewhere, Rowohlt put the first paperbacks on the market – not to everyone’s delight.
Because there were enough doom-mongers then which saw the tattering of the German book culture in the renunciation from beautiful hardback book – tag sales, belittling, and what it also indicates terms for contempt. Furthermore, Rowohlt kept a page free in each book for cigarette advertising; what happened caused the upper bourgeoisie to hit the ceiling with rage. But Rowohlt was clever enough to win over the Juno3 smoker Gottfried Benn with a dignified statement to the theme of art and capital, so that the cigarette advertising all made sense at the end.

The history of the reading culture teaches that it continued elegantly and sophisticatedly after Rowohlt’s taboo breach with the art of books – the paperback served as a medium of quick reading material or suffered an aesthetic refinement, standing for the beautiful Insel4 books, for example.
What the paperback previously was, the e-book is today: he-who-must-not-be-named for the friends of high-grade bound classics, welcoming supporting medium for those that want to read a text in transit that they subsequently do not need any more. The large trade publishers offer the suitable digital counterpart to almost every hardcover release but are cautious to thin-lipped when dealing with the question for their relationship to the electronic book. They consider it as competition to the traditional book, but quickly adding that one could not ignore it if one would like to remain successful on the market. The share of e-books in publishing sales now lies at just over 16 percent; the projection will also be that for the forthcoming year. Almost all German publishers made the e-book version less expensive than the printed book, in many cases by more than 20 percent.
But must one be so unforgivingly confronted with the tangible and the digital? Does one thing in fact, not make light of the other? The author Judith Schalansky produces an elaborately homemade book series, the "Natural History" by publisher Matthes und Seitz5 - which are texts with zoological or biological themes, illustrated with visual aids and supplied with selected typefaces. For Schalansky the electronic book is also a corrective for the analogue book market. The hardback book, she says, must defend its right to exist against the e-book, thus possessing properties that justify its brilliant job. It must show what it can do.
But not even the most passionate cultural naysayers believe that the e-book has supplanted the hardback or even the costly book. Both text mediums will still presumably exist side-by-side for a long time, it is possible that the e-book will regulate the yield of hardback books. That could mean that the demand on a hardback book becomes greater and greater – with regards to content and in the elected forms of presentation of printing, binding, typeface, and illustration.

The electronic book is already an indispensable preservative of texts for the traditionalists, which will no longer be accessible in analogue form in the near future – very old books and writings, whose preservation is only still possible in the medium-term. Also the ideas, dissertations, and scientific work display exclusively digitally in the future, which can be measured and appreciated in everyday experience. Digital text programs, with their search and memory functions, significantly more effectively offer than the script, in which one skims through and laboriously justifies the sources.
Therefore, publishing houses will publish future books either in print as well as digital or only digital, for example with texts which in actuality are hardback and with whom it is more useful to distribute them quickly, while making them available in the long run. And it will give the beautiful and elaborate hardback book with graphics and select typefaces whose representation on the display would have been rather poorly effective. This of course can always be approximated with the provision that the aesthetic of the digital book and the possibilities improve.
Who reads what when where – from these questions is the success of the e-book and not to isolate that of the printed books. A study of the Association of the German Book Traders calculates that only 18 percent of the respondents can imagine themselves sitting with an e-book in the lounge chair, lying in bed 47 percent prefer an e-book to the conventional book. It appears fundamentally as the Germans bade farewell to the idea that the printed book offers the only real presented text. But it is not so that the reader would like to say goodbye to the printed version. The reader behaviour is difficult to predict, there is not the e-book reader and the stoic reader, just as there are the few people that only read the printed newspaper and avoid online titles.
More than sixty years ago when Ernst Rowohlt went on the market with his greatly-reprinted books, he had no idea if and how the new book invention would cause furore. He at least had a secret recipe that other publishers did not have: the Emil Lumbeck’s "Eluid6". "The pages in my books are stuck like screws in wood", Rowohlt said at that time to Der Spiegel7.
Today one would smile at such a kind of down-to-earth analogism and the beautiful phrase with the index finger on Swype.
