Surge is characterized by rhythmic fluctuations of discharge pressure. Typically, the time between pulses is between 1/4 second and 5 seconds. Surge is an unstable operating condition that can cause structural damage to the rotor blades. Several conditions can cause surge; for example, a momentary discharge spike beyond response time of the valves, or poorly adjusted controls. Surge is sensed by a rapid drop in discharge pressure, followed by a pressure rise. If the control system detects a surge, the compressor unloads automatically and remains unloaded until the Reset button is pressed. There is an option available to automatically reload the compressor after a short time delay. With this option, if the compressor surges three times in a one hour period, then the compressor will remain unloaded until the Reset button is pressed
