Dear members,

As part of the May release we have added several new features to our forums, including:

Last postings now shown as reference

Implementing a suggestion made by site members Jerzy Czopik and Marion Schimmelpfennig, when you answer in a thread you will be able to see the last ten visible posts in the thread in reverse chronological order underneath the reply box.

Postings pending approval now visible and editable by poster

As you know, postings by non-member registered users without verified identity require the approval of a moderator to be published. This was uncomfortable when such postings required editing, as they were also invisible for the poster. Besides posters submitted their contributions and had no way to know what happened to them until they saw them published.

Starting from this release these postings will be visible and editable by the poster, who will be therefore able to know that it is pending approval and to edit it should the need arise. To avoid misunderstandings these postings will be seen with a different background and showing a label “Posting not yet approved”.

Besides, posting approved by moderators will revert to this Vetting state (i.e. requiring moderator's approval) when edited by the poster. This issue aims at preventing situations where a posting is approved and later edited in a way that represents an infraction against the rules.

Note: This moderator's approval requirement for postings from non-member users without verified identity was created long ago as response to site abusers who made life uncomfortable for all forum users. Please consider becoming a site member or having your identity verified to get your postings published directly.

Visible postings can be now moved to a vetting status

Moderators will now be able to change postings directly visible (because the poster is a member or has verified identity) to a “vetting” state, with the posting visible only to the poster and mods, and editable by the former.

The purpose of this new feature is to allow posters to correct or edit postings which contained small infractions, so that they can be approved once they are in line with the site rules. Until today such postings had to be hidden and the poster had to re-post them.

Editing of postings will be limited in time

Editing of postings will be limited to the first 24 hours of posting. This will allow ample time for correcting typos but will prevent users from going back to old discussions and altering their posting, thus de-naturalizing previous discussions.

Please feel free to post your feedback in this thread.

Once again thanks to you, our members, for making these improvements possible.

Regards,
Enrique

One improvement still missing May 19, 2006

In the box for the most recent postings when I click the link: "View additional recent postings" I get a list with again the same postings that were visible on the front page plus additional ones. Either this should be mended in accordance to the text of the link and only additional postings should be shown or the text of the link should be changed to something like: View a longer list of recent postings.

This is great! It won't fully solve the problem but it should be a help. Sometimes I'm reading through a thread and am thoroughly baffled by the non sequiturs. Then I see the telltale "Edited at such-and-such a time." Usually I have to guess at what that post originally said, though sometimes I remember.

Some users go back and change the sense of their original posting. Others soften the language they used originally, making later postings appear to be overreactions. Somehow, it doesn't seem fair. I edit my posts myself, for typos, or when I think of the brilliant phrase I should have used. Never being satisfied with what we've written--the virtue and vice of translators! But I don't make changes that alter the sense or nature of what I originally wrote.

What I would like to see: Posters have 10 minutes (or maybe an hour, in the case of postings that need to be vetted) from the time the posting appears to correct misstatements or typos. After that, it's like KudoZ: you can add comments but not delete what's there. And after 24 hours, **or if anyone has replied to your posting with a quote,** you can't edit it at all--only make a new posting farther down the queue.

Thanks for the constant improvements to my favorite site!

Jane

VERY HANDY ! May 21, 2006

It's a major breakthrough and some companies need to be identified regarding rates, locality, payment history etc...

Speaking of non sequiturs... May 21, 2006

David, did you post your comment in the wrong forum, or am I too obtuse to see the relation between identifying companies and the new features of ProZ forums? Sorry, but I'm lost. Could you clarify, please?

Great! But there is a problem May 24, 2006

Great! I discovered it a couple of days ago after posting a comment in some thread. But for some reason new feature "Postings pending approval now visible and editable by poster" doesn't work in the Russian forum (at least it didn't yesterday). Is this a glitch?

Oleksandr

Everything is OK now May 26, 2006

Everything is OK now. Since yesterday the new features work in the Russian forum too. Please disregard my previous post.
