Spanish term

data

Spanish to English Art/Literary History Text from the Canary Islands

I've looked up DRAE but can't see what data could mean in this context. Tired brain ... Any help would be much appreciated :-) Thinking that Guayedra may be an official title ... so .... who enjoyed the title of Guayedra ... but can't find a reference to Guayedra to find out what it means in the Canaries ...

Charles Davis Dec 21, 2016:
Thank you for your encouragement, gentlemen. I have posted an answer.
David Hollywood Dec 21, 2016:
I think the suggested ideas of "grant" or "gift" are certainly on the right track
Jennifer Levey Dec 21, 2016:
@Charles It'd be nice to see an answer here to which I could nail a well-earned agrí. Not that you need the Ks, of course; but this really ought to find its way into the glossary.
Charles Davis Dec 21, 2016:
That is from their Diccionario básico de canarismos, by the way.
Charles Davis Dec 21, 2016:
Academia Canaria de la Lengua " data.

Charles Davis Dec 21, 2016:
Ah, I see: DRAE from 1791 onwards. I doubt this is related to that, though.
Charles Davis Dec 21, 2016:
PS. Where did you get "data=Permiso por escrito" from?
Charles Davis Dec 21, 2016:
@Donal I am sure you are right. This seems to be an archaic Canarian use of the word. José de Viera y Clavijo, the eighteenth-century Canarian historian, uses it in what is clearly this sense:

https://books.google.es/books?id=P9M0Ou47wikC&pg=RA3-PA412&l...

He also uses it to mean date, but that's standard.

If you search for "data de tierra" you'll find a few more Canarian examples, mostly C15-16.

So "gift" or "grant" if you wanted to translate it.
DLyons Dec 21, 2016:
My guess is that "data de tierra" is a land gift (dar) for services rendered e.g. to soldiers. This being effected by data=Permiso por escrito para hacer algo.
Robert Carter Dec 21, 2016:
Well spotted DLyons. From the looks of things "data" might refer to some kind of land feature, possibly this:

http://dle.rae.es/?id=BsM9P0S|BsNR3r2

Perhaps the property contains such a feature.
Lorna O'Donoghue (asker) Dec 21, 2016:
Thanks a million ... so it is .. :-)
DLyons Dec 21, 2016:
Name of a property - see Section IW of http://www.benmagec.org/turcon/pdf/grancanaria/rgc1ocr.pdf

gift / grant of land (Canary Islands)

I'll repeat here the definitions I found on the Academia Canaria de la Lengua website, from their Diccionario básico de canarismos and posted in the discussion area:

"data
http://www.academiacanarialengua.org/palabra/data/

So then it's a Canarian word for a historical grant of land by the governor of an island and can mean both the land granted and the document by which the grant was made.

This "data" in your document, however, was granted by the Catholic Monarchs themselves to don Fernando Guanarteme in 1485:
http://www.grupoelcalvario.com/NotasInformativas/Cortijo_de_... (p. 17)

And since it's a place name it should be left as is; the translation could be added either in parentheses after "data" or in a note, if you wish.

And much appreciated! Thank, Robin.
agree Robert Carter : Can't be sure myself whether the text is using "data" as a proper name since it's not capitalized. In any case, enjoyed this one and thanks for finding those historical references.

Thanks, Robert! Perhaps it is a moot point, but I think I'd use the Spanish term anyway and then give a translation.
